It was founded in 1847 by Alfred Payson alone and named for his deceased wife, Caroline. The first post office in the town was established in 1848. In 1865, the town became a part of the Illinois Central Railroad system. At the time of its incorporation as a townsite, Carol Stream had a population of just 10 people. By 1900, however, it had grown to over 100 people and by 1910 it had reached 1,000 residents. In 1924-25 Carol Streams volunteer fire department became one of only 12 departments throughout all of Kane County to be organized with a ladies auxiliary as its first president (the other 11 were men). The women functioned as firefighters until 1975 when they were finally given their own fire department within the community proper. They continue to serve as presidents today and manage all aspects of their department - from battalion meetings to fundraising efforts - until FIRE IS BACK! One aspect that has not changed much since then is how seriously our community takes its role in fighting fires: every week we donate materials and equipment to various local agencies battling fires; every year we auction off items from our collection including toys donated by parents during summertime blockades; we also have an annual fundraising event where proceeds go towards support programs for children with cancer or other illnesses; AND we've even started doing things like selling "fire food" which is made up mostly of fruit snacks that canisters say you can cook on your stovetop into meals for those who live nearwildfires!
