Carbondale, Illinois (population: 23,000) is a city in the Will County region of Illinois. The city was founded in 1839 by David Rice and Issac Aspinwall. Its name comes from the French word "carré" meaning "square." Carbondale became an incorporated town in 1868. It was first called Carbondale Heights, but changed its name to Carbondale in 1892 because it was located on a bend in the river where Carbondale Creek flowed into the Des Plaines River.
