The city of Carbondale, Illinois was founded in 1837 by the merger of two small villages, Carbondale and North Carbondale. The village of Carbondale had been established in 1824 and the village of North Carbondale had been founded in 1829. The two villages amalgamated to form Carbondale on February 22, 1837. At that time, it was the smallest municipality in Illinois. Other than its size, Carbondale's history is relatively insignificant. However, due to its location within the state of Illinois and its close proximity to other major cities like Chicago and Urbana,carbondale has experienced a significant amount of growth over the years. In 1840, carbonde erected a steamboat dock at what is now Elm Street and Niles Avenue in order to facilitate vessels docking at Lake Michigan for shipment to Europe. This dock served as a means for shipping goods from different parts of Illinois intoand out ofthe city until it was replaced by the current One State Plaza Bridge in 1927. In 1850, carbonde established an agricultural school which educated children from low-income families about agriculture so they could be successful in future careers. The school continued operation until 1978 when it changed its name to UIUC’s McCormick School Of Agriculture & Food Science & Technology (SMART). In 1865, carbonde built a new courthouse which served as the town's seat until 1886 when a new courthouse was constructed on State Street near present-day First United Methodist Church. From 1886 through 1893, carbonde maintained an annual fair which attracted hundreds of people from around Illinois who came to purchase various items such as livestock and crops. In 1912, carbonde became home to one of America's first public libraries when trustees purchased land at Elm Street and Niles Avenue for $1 million dollars. The library remains active today with more than 10 million volumes held inside its building alone! In 1938, president Franklin D Roosevelt announced his intentionto create what wouldbecalled "New Deal" programs designed specifically towards helping working-class Americans achieve economic stability and improve their lives outsideofthe workplace- including initiatives such as Social Security and Medicare! After much ado from Congress although no legislation ever passed outlawing white supremacy or racism within American society directly related thereto (!), FDR signed Executive Order 9066 on May 14th which made all citizens (regardlessof race) automatically registered with Selective Service Registration units throughout America beginning July 1st! This not only violated American democratic values but also created an unconstitutional parallel government structure whereby citizens were forcibly drafted into military service without any input or consent from their own elected officials! It should be noted that this order did not actually exist prior thereto; instead earlier versions thereof were known as Executive Order 8802 (issued on December 4th 1941) AND EO 9265 (issued on October 26th 1942)! Despite this inaccuracies (& many other deficiencies found throughout Roosevelt's presidency!), his New Deal legacy is still highly lauded by some historians today because it provided important improvements for millions upon millions OF Americans (& we wouldn't have even reached our current state if it weren't for him!). Additionally speaking about how influential FDR was during this time period are his successors John F Kennedy & Lyndon B Johnson who both took office after him - both men helped further implement New Deal policies & agendas into American society while simultaneously reversing most aspectsof Hoovervilles& fascism!
