Until the early 1800s, Carbondale was a small farming town located in southern Illinois. The area that is now Carbondale was first settled by Native Americans and later became part of the Indiana Territory. In 1812, the United States acquired California from Mexico and made it an official territory. Carbondale became part of California and was renamed Sacramento. In 1823, General James K. Polk invaded Mexico during the Mexican-American War and acquired what is now Texas as well as much of present-day Arizona. This acquisition led to increased hostilities between American forces and Mexican troops, which led to many skirmishes in what is now Carbondale. One such skirmish took place on October 20th of that year when American soldiers were ambushed by Mexican cavalry at a ranch named Rancho San José de los Cuchillas (later Mapleton). The battle resulted in the death of four American soldiers and two Mexicans; both sides claimed victory. Since there were no military installations in Carbondale at this time, most local residents relied upon hunting for food instead of agriculture. Huntinggrounds such as Rancho San José de los Cuchillas continued to be used until around 1840 when a new courthouse was built in town and all hunting operations were moved to that building. With the arrival of settlers came firearms, which quickly changed the nature of local life. At first only men could own guns; however, eventually women also started acquiring firearms so they could protect themselves against potential attackers or possible theft by male friends or family members alike. Because carbondsales lacked any kind of armor or protection against buckshot pellets fired from shotguns, their houses were often targeted for attack by other farmers who believed they would not fight back if attacked unarmed

Carbondale is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 41,835 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Cook County. The city is located on the northwest side of Chicago and is bordered to the north by Aurora Township and to the east by Niles Township. To the south lies Lake Michigan. The first Europeans to visit Carbondale were Jesuit missionaries in 1679-80 who founded a mission there from what is now Joliet, Illinois. The Jesuits left after eight years because of religious differences with Catholic Spain over control of North America. In 1795, General James Kinsman arrived near Carbondale with his army and established Fort Kinsman as an American military outpost on the village's west bank overlooking the open prairies around present day Carbondale. In 1834, General John Taylor laid out a town plan for Carbondale which included Lots 1-3 (now Fourth Street), Lots 4-6 (now Wabash Avenue), and Lots 7-9 (now Sibley Boulevard). On July 20, 1834, he ordered Captain George Aiken to organized a force of about seventy men under Major Robert Stephenson to build a road from White River Junction in Indiana into Illinois so that goods could be shipped downriver for export purposes; this road would become known as "the Great Northern Road". Aiken started construction on what became Third Street northeast of Main Street in 1837 but was forced to stop due to flooding caused by heavy rains early that year; work resumed later that year and finished two blocks southeast of where Third Street now stands just west of Present Day First Avenue between Randolph Drive and Western Avenue.
