One was located at Third and Main Streets, and the other at Elm and Washington Streets. These torgues were designed by Harry Weishaupt and are still being used today. Carbondale, Illinois is a city in the southern Urbana-Champaign metropolitan area of the United States. The population was 34,827 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Urbana Combined Statistical Area. Carbon County was organized on March 16, 1847 from parts of Champaign and Andover counties. On November 3, 1868, Carroll County was organized from Carbon County. The east side of Carbondale lies within Cook County and is part of its Chicago metropolitan area. The west side lies within Will County and is part of the Evanston–Chicago combined statistical area. The first store outside of Paris, Indiana opened in Carbondale on December 4th, 1853 by Wm Mears & Co., with a total market value at $1,591 before it burned down two days later. The first post office in Carbondale was established on December 8th, 1853 with Wm Mears as its first sender/receiver. In 1864 John Fenton built a sawmill on the south bank of the White River near what is now Carbondale High School; this mill became one of Illinois' leading manufacturers of lumber products until it closed in 1977. In 1865 local resident Lemuel Higgs founded Higgs Millinery Company which continues to operate today as one of Illinois' oldest and largest retailers specializing exclusively in womens wear and other accessories for women including men's clothing also available through their retail stores (the company ceased operations in 1990). It seems that everything started small here back then... even our very own post office!

The first settlers brought their families from New England and were followed by farmers from Indiana and other parts of the Midwest. Carbondale's economy grew mainly due to agriculture during the early years but it also became an important manufacturing center for agricultural products such as flour, feed grains, Telephone cards, Chevrolet trucks and radios. In recent decades, Carbondale has become a center for art and culture with several cultural institutions including the Carbondale Arts District which features popular local restaurants and galleries as well as performances by major theater companies throughout the year. The Village was originally planned on a much larger scale but due to rapid population growth during World War II there was not enough space available so Carbondale suffered some degree of depopulation which is still observable today with few people living within the limits of town square. Today there are only a fraction of those who once lived here that remain within sight or sound of town hall; however many businesses have relocated or closed because they could not keep up with changing customer trends or new competition from out-of-towners.
Carbondale, Illinois is located in the northwest corner of Illinois and is bordered by Decatur County to the north, Linn County to the east, and Kane County to the south. The city was founded on November 3, 1867 by James H. Mason and others as a potato town named for Captain James H. Polk of the United States Navy who was killed in action at Santiago de Cuba on October 20, 1849. settlement began around 1870 when families from nearby Mokena came to live in what is now Carbondale. In 1871-72, carbondale became a station on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad network and was one of several towns along that line built as railroad towns during the First Great Awakening period of American cultural history which began around 1830-1870. By 1886, Carbondale had become one of America's largest grain markets with its own flour mill and library. The city's economic development proceeded steadily through World War II until a series of devastating fires destroyed much of downtown in 1945 which left Carbondale with only a few remaining buildings including Masonic Hall still standing today
