Carbondale, Illinois is a city in the southern region of Illinois, United States. The population was 43,238 at the 2010 census. It is home to Southern Illinois University Carbondale and has been called "the breadbasket of the Midwest." The city is named after General Ulysses S. Grant who served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of War from 1881 to 1885 and as Governor of Illinois from 1887 to 1893. The first permanent settler in Carbondale were three brothers, George Washington Carroll (1812-1892), John Carroll (1815-1890) and Moses Hazard (1796-1870). In 1838, General Oliver Otis Howard built a sawmill on the west bank of the Sangamon River which became one of the most important mills in town. In 1850, Abraham Lincoln visited Carbondale while he was campaigning for president and subscribed to its newspaper Lincoln returned east in 1861 and began his own political career by becoming Mayor of Carbondale in 1865. He would later be elected as a US Senator from Illiniwek from 1871 to 1975. After leaving office he moved back into politics becoming Superintendent of Schools for Cook County during their time as an independent county government until they merged with Chicago in 1961. In 1962, local businessmen formed what became known as the Carbondale Foundation which purchased 80 acres (30 hectares) on State Street near Northern Kentucky University for $1 million dollars The purpose behind this purchase was twofold: 1) To create a new campus for Southern Illinois University Carbondales Department of Business Administration; 2) To provide access to land that could not be used by SIUC because it sat on top of an open landfill that emitted hazardous materials into surrounding neighborhoods

Carbondale is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,723 at the 2010 census. Carbondale has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Carbondale were French colonists who came in 1763 and founded the village of La Salle on the east side of the river Kankakee. After the French were forced out of Illinois during the American Revolution, they started a new colony called Fort Dearborn on the west side of the Kankakee River. In 1803, General James Wilkinson built a fort here and named it after himself. From this fort, he developed a strong military reputation and was chosen as governor of all Upper Illinois Territory during its early days. In 1826, John Sangamon lighted his first fire at what is now Carbondale while traveling through McHenry County on his way back from a cattle drive upriver to Prospecttown on the Mississippi River. This event helped start what would become Carbondale's economic growth – sawmills began operations here in 1827 and soon there was an ample supply of lumber available for buildings and other purposes. By 1830, carbondale had reached its current size with over 150 residents; it had also begun to prosper commercially as a shipping point for goods going downriver from Scipioville (now Chicago) and northward across Lake Michigan to Holland (now Milwaukee). A paper mill began production in 1840 at present day Waukegan Avenue and South Street; this mill produced high-quality paper products until it closed in 1906. The area around Carbondale experienced some significant social changes during its époque d'or period – many prominent people lived here including John Fritchie (founder of Chicago), James Emerson (president US Senate), David Dixon (mayor runner-up for mayoralty against Mayor Woodford Smith in 1898), J P Hickey (senator from Cook County), Augustus Saint Gaudens ( sculptor ), among others. However, by 1870s many industries had either closed or relocated away fromcarbondale due to competition from larger towns such as Elgin or Peoria; however some businesses did continue operation until about World War II when carbONDALE became an agricultural center due to irrigation systems brought about by advances in agriculture technology Today much of Carbondale's cultural history can be found embodied within its architecture: most notably Mission Revival Style houses dating back to 1925 are still extant downtown while newer structures such as Garrison School have been converted into residential units; for physical reminders thatcarbondales historic periods have passed see numerous turnouts throughout town celebrating "Stories That Matter" events like pancake breakfast Sundays or chili cookoffs every month . Additionally there are several museums located throughout town which offer insights into local culture including one devoted exclusively to local breadmaking techniques known as Breadbasket Museum
One of Carbondale's most important residents was Abraham Lincoln. He was a native of this town and graduated from high school in 1847. After working as a lawyer, he became an Illinois state legislator in 1851 and then served as the 6th U.S. president from 1865 to 1869.
