While much damage was done to buildings within town limits during the fire, it did not touch any other parts of town and preserved much of downtown Carbondale for future development. On November 3rd, 1917 – three years after World War I ended – Carbondale hosted its first ever municipal election which saw the victory of Mayor George Ladd over incumbent Charles Jolson by 123 votes to 39 (out of a total OF 545 cast). This event helped spur further development within the municipality which would culminate with incorporation as a village on December 15th, 1920. In 1927 – only two years after incorporation –carbondelecame under control of Cook County government when that body merged with Illinois State University to form Northwestern University District #2 (later renamed DePaul University District #2). During this time period, carbondelecame home to some of America's most famous intellectuals including Fyodor Dostoevsky and Ernest Hemingway who both lived there while attending Northwestern University. In 1957-1958 an extensive renovation project took place at City Hall which included new sidewalks and infrastructure such as public baths and an ice rink beneath City Hall itself; this renovation marked substantial improvements for CarbondALE’s overall appearance since its establishment as a municipality two decades earlier! On January 14th, 1962 - less than one year following its incorporation into Cook County - CarbONDALE received word from President John F Kennedy that he would visit campus during his nationally televised speech at DePaul University on April 12th! carbondelecame alive with excitement as students across America eagerly awaited news about their president’s upcoming visit! JFK made it all the way down to campus before delivering his speech - proof that even small towns can still get excited about big events! After JFK’s speech, many streets in central CarbONDALE were renamed in his honor including JFK Boulevard & Park Avenue where he once delivered speeches live from!
