The first firearms were made in Carbondale, Illinois. The first handgun was made in Carbondale on February 15th, 1857 by Simeon Winchester. This gun was called the “Basketmaker”. It had a barrel of 25 inches and was used for hunting game. The next firearm to be made in Carbondale was the “Pumpkin Shooter”. This gun had a barrel of 32 inches and was used for target shooting. The next firearm to be made in Carbondale was the “Butterfly Gun”. This gun had a barrel of 36 inches and it could shoot projectiles up to 100 yards away. In 1865, carbondsales began making handguns with barrels of 42 inches or longer which were known as the “Long Tom” handguns. These handguns were more powerful than earlier handguns and they could shoot projectiles up to 350 yards away. From 1865-1868, carbondsales also produced shotguns which were known as the “Hickory Gunboat Shotguns”. These shotguns had barrels of either 24 or 28 inches and they could shot projectiles up to 60 feet away from the muzzle

Carbondale, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 64,569 at the 2000 census. Carbondale is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Carbondale. It was founded in 1844 by John A. Slocum as a small farming community on the southern edge of what is now Carbondale. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location on the main transportation corridor between Chicago and Indianapolis. In 1929, Carbondale became an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council form of government. The first white settler in Carbondale was Isaac Latham, who arrived in 1844 from Connecticut. He built a cabin near present day Carbondale Lake on land he had bought from the Native American nations that lived there before him. Latham's Cabin still stands today and is one of Carbondaland's most visible landmarks; it has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. In 1847, Methodist Reverend Drayson Buell came to Carbondale from Moline, Illinois to start a mission school for Indian children nearby at Fort Dearborn (later renamed Peoria). After two years of construction, Buell's School opened in October 1849; it served as the primary indigenous educational institution fornative Americans west of the Mississippi River until 1865 when Congress passed the Noncommissioned Officer Training Corps Act which required all enlisted men in Armed Forces to attend military schools instead. In 1850s settlers started arriving from Maine and New Hampshire via steamboats anchored off what is now Downtown Chicago: these early arrivals founded towns such as Danville and Galesburg along Michigan Avenue north of downtownChicago proper; these towns continued to grow until they amalgamated into Chicago in 1873 whilecarbONDALE remained separate municipal entity with its own Mayor/Council system! In 1861-1865 Union soldiers were stationed at Fort Dearborn which led to increased demand for goods and services withinthe town so businesses began opening up around local mills includingJohn A., Abraham & Co., Jno Haggerty & Co., Wm McCormick & Sons... This period also saw major changes within carbONDALE itself with many new homes being built on current siteof Civic Center Park including ones by noted architect Nathan Hale (who designed several prominent buildingsin later decades including City Hall) - this area would be known as “Old Town” duringits heyday! In 1870s local builder Samuel Morse moved his family to carbONDALE from Streator IL where they had settled some years earlier after hearing abouta land grant available for settlement northwest of Chicago! Samuel Morse soon established himself as one Of America's Most Famous Builder/developers helpingto shape much OF TODAY'S CITY CENTER IN HIS BACKYARD! Today’s Old Town Main Street containsmany original pioneer dwellings dating backto those early days while also hosting numerous historic commercial establishmentsincluding oldest Winthrop Dean store still operating today
