Throughout most of the early 20th century, Carbondale saw an increase in gun sales and usage due to its location as an agricultural center and its easy access to rural areas for hunting. As newly formed municipalities began expanding into Carbondale during the 1930s and 1940s, Gun Lamps became increasingly common across southern Illinois. By 1951, however, Carbondale had become an entirely urban area with no restrictions on handgun ownership whatsoever.

Carbondale is the second-largest city in Cook County and the largest city without a county seat. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in Carbondale was on the east bank of the Chicago River, about two miles (3 km) north of downtownChicago. A post office called Carbondale was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1871, John Prentice Platt founded what would become Karras Mills Corporation on land that he had purchased from Abraham Lincoln for $1 million dollars. The milling industry would soon make Carbondale an important center of production; its mills produced flour for most of Cook County and parts of Kane and McHenry counties as well as exported products to other countries. In 1925, Karras Mills merged with Stromberg-Webb Brothers Company to form United Mills Corporation; UMC continued to produce flour until 1972 when it merged with Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company to form American Weighing & Milling Co., Inc.. On October 15th 1944 during World War II, Carbondale became one of five cities within Overland Park boundaries that were bombed by Japanese forces during Operation Firestorm; over 1,500 buildings were destroyed or damaged including many churches and homes which remain standing today. In 1951 Mayor James Buchanan announced plans to develop what would become Kansas City into a regional city similar to Chicago but larger due to its ability to support more than one million people within 10 miles (16 km). This plan never came off because Too much money was spent on building roads instead of developing proper transportation infrastructure which made KC suburban instead of urban like Chicago should have been done originally! As time passed and jobs moved out west towards Kansas City or Dayton Ohio some residents turned their backs on growing pains and moved back into Carbondale while others adapted by starting small businesses such as restaurants/cafes/grocery stores etc... With everyone adapting there once again flourished businesses such as Applebees who opened their first location in Carbondale back in 1984 after years prohibition from being open inside bars

In 1870-71 anlegraph line was built between Chicago and Carbondale making it possible for people in both cities to communicate with each other directly. By 1880 there were 126 businesses in Carbondale with 4500 residents employing over 50% of all workers in town during that period. Railroad transportation made this town even more important as grain grew increasingly important to local economies throughout most of America during this time frame. The late 1800s saw an increasing trend towards suburbia as working class families moved into towns such as Cincinnati and Detroit while wealthier families left these growing cities behind for greener pastures closer to major commercial centers like St Louis or Milwaukeeand Chicago Heights near O'Hare Airport becoming increasingly popular choices for middle class professionals looking for easy access to similar sized jobs but without much city noise or pollution outside their homes

Carbondale's first settlement was on the eastern edge of present-day Carbondale, date unknown. The community name "Carbondale" was derived from Irish Gaelic "Carbúdaile". It may have been named for John Ireland who settled in that area in 1802. The first store in Carbondale was opened by George Washington and His Father-in-law Ebenezer Cooke in 1825. In 1856, Abraham Lincoln visited Carbondale while he was campaigning for president and preached to a local congregation at the First Congregational Church on State Street.
