He and his family were among about 600 people who left Nauvoo for Illinois on the Utah–Illinois Railroad on November 8, 1837. They arrived at what is now CarbondaleEight days later they erected a log cabin on a small creek known as Hickey's Creek to await their captain's orders as to where they should locate their new home. In 1840, Mr. Hickey married Miss Emma Smith from Kanesville Ohio and they moved to Carbondale with their two children: Johnathan (Jehovah) and Northwesten (Nancy). In 1841 they built a frame house on Third Street which still stands today as part of Griggs Hall Museum Complex housing many artifacts from early Carbondale including an oil lamp dated back to 1860 which has been donated by Mrs. Annie Ayer Griggs from her late husband's collection. The house served as the home of Mayor Aiken until it caught fire during Prohibition Prohibition destroyed many buildings in Carbondale during that time but fortunately no one was injured or killed inside; this event remains unblemished memory for thiscommunity It wasn't until after prohibition ended that business began anew with farmers coming into town looking for livestock markets when commercialism took over again In 1924 there was another devastating fire which destroyed much of downtown carbondale killing fifty five people including six women firefighters who perished trying to save people from burning buildings . This event still haunts residents living near downtown areas today due to intense heat generated by numerous welding operations taking place simultaneously during that time throughout town center flames ripped through entire block leaving nothing standing

La Salle built an earthwork fortification that still stands today - this became known as Fort Dearborn or Old Fort Dearborn due to its age and proximity to other forts on Lake Michigan within easy walking distance westward along State Road 2 until it was razed by Union troops in 1864 during General Anthony Wayne's Invasion of Canada following his victory at Yorktown naval battle off Long Island Sound...
