Carbondale, Illinois was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk as a small community on the banks of the Carbondale River. The town rapidly grew, becoming one of the most important industrial centres in Illinois during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Carbondale's importance declined during World War II due to its location near Chicago, but it regained its prominence after the war when new industries such as aluminum production began to grow there. Carbondale has since become a suburb of Chicago. The town was first settled by Europeans in what is now southern Illinois. In 1816, French explorer Pierre Charles L’Enfant sighted what is now Carbondale on his way from St. Louis to Cairo, Egypt. L’Enfant named the area "Carbondale" after his father-in-law, General James K. Polk (1804-1865). A year later, Polish immigrant John Sadowski arrived in Illinois and built a cabin here on the bank of the Carbondale River. Sadowski became a landowner and initial settler in what is now carbondale; he also developed an agricultural enterprise that produced corn and other crops for local markets and sold these products to settlers throughout central Illinois. In 1837, General James K. Polk established Fort Dearborn at what is today Carbondale while he was traveling through central Illinois on his way to lead American forces against Mexico in battle at Buena Vista Creek (now Hennepin County). Upon victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek, Polk renamed Fort Dearborn after himself – "General James K.'s Fort Dearborn". The fort served as part of American military installations throughout central Illinois until 1840 when it was transferred westward along with all other US military posts located within Mexican territory following Texas Annexation into US jurisdiction that year. The population of Carbondalese continued to grow during this time; by 1840 it had reached 2,000 people living primarily on farms around present day downtown Carbondalese and elsewhere alongriverbank communities including LaPorte (later LaGrange), Bloomington (later Bloomington Hills), Normal Heights (laterchicago), White Oak Harbor (now Elgin), Princeton Junction (later Princeton Junction Township) and others respectively.. By 1850 nearly all residents were farmers or professionals working in nearby cities or towns; only 10% were natives of Indiana or Ohio who had come west for trade or adventure rather than settle permanently.. In 1856–57 Colonel Augustus Kelley leased 1/4 acre north of present day downtown from De Witt Clinton for use as a public square; soon thereafter Kelley donated additional land east of Broadway Street for development into what is now Central Market Square which served as open air market daily from July 1861 through October 1865.. Northwest corner lot remain undeveloped today adjacent Chicagoland Speedway .. Between 1860 & 1870 several churches were built: First Presbyterian Church c1900 then Baptist church 1886 then Methodist Episcopal church 1907 etc… One notable nonresidential structure erected between 1860-70 was Masonic Lodge No 5 constructed on lot donated by JB Priestley.. After various fires destroyed buildings extensively across northwestern Cook County during 1863 floods caused by severe thunderstorm system called “Katrina” - many businesses moved out east towards Skokie where they continued operations until thorough rebuild took place two years later…. By 1870 most households contained 3 members with average size chimney either 3'6" diameter or less…. Most families lived close together indoors with shared ovens & ranges etc….. At this time about one third [of population] lived off farmsteads…. In 1830s & 1840s many shops did not open until Thursday evening because no matter how hard people worked weekdays tavern keepers opened up slots available night before… Most merchants kept shop hours 8 p m – 12 a m Saturdays…..
