In 1886 construction began on what would become Northwestern University’s first campus within boundaries defined by Carbondale – bounded on the north by present-day State Street; on the east by Merchandise Mart Boulevard; and on the south by Dyke Road which forms Lake Michigan to its west border Carbondale experienced rapid growth during World War I due to its proximity to military installations including Camp Douglas located just north of town along Dyke Road; Fort Sheridan located across Lake Michigan to the east; and Camp Wayne located about halfway between Carbondale and Chicago itself across from LaSalle Street). After World War I ended, Carbondale experienced significant decline with few major development projects occurring until well into the 1960s when a number of businesses opened up such as Sears Roebuck & Company (1939), Sam's Club (1963), Ford Motor Company (1968), Jiffy Lube (1971) and Motorola Incorporated (1978). Carbondale also saw increased activity for local music venues such as The Fantasyland Ballroom which hosted local blues bands throughout prohibition era until it closed in 1984 Today's economy is heavily reliant upon service industry businesses such as hotels/motels/restaurants/grocers etc., technology companies such as Apple Inc., Googleplex LLC., Amazon Web Services, IBM Corp., Microsoft Corp., Eli Lilly & Co., Abbott Laboratories - all having Business Centers within easy walking distance or Interstate 95 access There are several dozen colleges or universities based in or around Carbondale with more than 2 million students enrolled annually making it one of Illinois' largest college communities
