Carbondale, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,851 as of the 2010 census. Carbondale is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. It borders theChicago metropolitan area to the north and west and suburban suburbs of Schaumburg to the south. The first inhabitants of what is now Carbondale were village farmers who lived around a small stream that ran through their village. In 1836, John Neely Bryan founded Neely's Bank in Carbondale. This bank became one of the largest banks in America and played an important role in early-20th century Illinois economy. In 1840, James Kapp purchased land adjacent to present-day Carbondale from John Neely Bryan for $1,000 cash. He named his new land Kapp Prairie because he had seen this area during his travels as a boy. The town site was surveyed by George Washington Carver on November 5, 1846 and officially registered on December 1st with 3 lots given for sale: lot No 2 (present day North Park Ave.) included in Carver's original plat; lot No 4 (now West Side Ave.) east of Market St.; and lot No 6 (now South Park Ave.) west of Market St.. The townsite name has been variously spelled "Carbondale", "Carbodale", "Karbdalune", and even "Carronde". On July 1, 1850, Carbondale lost its charter as a Village due to financial problems caused by low population growth rates which resulted from immigration restrictions placed on Cook County at that time. However, it regained its charter on October 15th following passage of an act by the General Assembly providing for such charters restoration when populations increased above 5000 or when Village trustees demonstrated satisfactory financial responsibility to their citizens/board members . On January 14th 1861 local citizens met at Union Hall to adopt resolutions ratifying a merger between Carbondale Township (then known as Addison Township) and Galesburg Township which had occurred two months earlier effective February 1st 1860 due to increasing population density within Galesburg Township with only small calls for separate villages taking place within Addison Township while many residents desired annexation into Galesburg Township due largely to strategic location between Chicago and Rockford making it difficult for them to get economic development going outside those cities proper while not being able to annex into other cities without impairing their self-government). This merger created what would become Cook County with over 50% African American residents – making it one of few areas in Illinois where black people formed majorities before 1960s suburbanization began reducing African American populations across all types of municipalities throughout Cook County resulting eventually in white majority communities throughout most parts of county by 2000s however there are still pockets within black majorities jurisdictions such as Neighborhood Watch Programs run byResidents residing near such programs) . In 1870–71 James McNamara built McNamara’s Depot on what is now North Park Avenue about three miles northwest of present-day Carbondale serving as one point access for goods coming into town from outlying settlements including Crystal City just east of town line along then US Highway 41; Whitehall about seven miles northeast along then US Highway 6; Greenfield about nine miles southeast along then US Highway 40 while also serving as points entry into town from surrounding rural areas including Black Hawk Junction located eight miles northeast along then future I-80; Beech Grove six miles southwest along then current I-675 southbound exit ramp off I-680 near Beech Grove Lake ; Woodridge four miles southeast along then current I-74 toll road exit ramp off I-74 just southwest corner thereof ; East Dundee five minutes south past present day UI Quadrangle onto Edwards Rd., approximately two thirds way between Cherry Hill Rd./ UI campus & east side street leading northward thence onto Edwards Rd., thence continuing northerly unofficially called “Beacon Road” until reaching today’s boundaries . Elected officials sworn into office upon ratification include Mayor James Murtaugh Jr.; Treasurer Thomas Fenton; Superintendent Joseph J Bishop JR.; Agent David Wisniewski JR.; Clerk Daniel Safferstein; Assessor Alexander Ziegler Jr.; Surrogate Court Judge Myron Brownell Sr.—all men whose terms expired December 31st 2020 or earlier . There have also been several women elected officials since 1870 including First Lady Emilie McCoy Carragher—whose term expired August 30th 1970 having served since May 9th 1917 concurrent with her husband William P Carragher who held office until his death June 25th 1966 having served continuously since November 16th 1906 coincident with their marriage prior thereto .
