The town grew around its railroad stations which were each built along two lines leading into Chicago: the Northwestern Railway (later called Metra) ran through Carbondale and north to Wacker Drive; while the Illinois Central Railroad (IC) ran east-west across Carbondale and south to Lemont Avenue. In 1880, carbondalese voters elected their first mayor, A C Haggerty, who served for four years before being succeeded by J P Walsh. From 1880 until 1920, Carbondalese residents voted Republican even though they lay within Cook County's Democratic Party boundaries. This indicates that many people in Carbondale believed that their political allegiance should be to their city or county rather than to another municipality within their own state or country
In 1892, Carbondale was founded as a small town by farmers and their families. The community was originally named "Carbondale", but the name was changed to honor John H. Carrington, who donated land for the town in 1892. Carbondale's first post office opened in 1902. In 1966, Carbondale became an incorporated city.
