The first European to set eyes on what would become Canton was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in 1795 while exploring northern Illinois. He named it after his French trading post near what is now Cleveland, Ohio. The small town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources: coal and metal mines were found nearby, as well as lumber mills that produced furniture and toys for America’s growing middle class. In 1894, Canton became one of twenty-six towns in Cook County to be annexed by Chicago. Canton’s rich history can be seen throughout its downtown core; much of which was built during the city’s heyday between 1915 and 1925 when Canton enjoyed a period of rapid growth thanks to an influx of workers from neighboring municipalities including Streamwood, Grayslake, Schaumburg, Lincolnshire and Hinsdale. Today many structures dating back to this time are still standing such as the former courthouse (1896), library (1915) or post office (1925). Today there are several remaining businesses in downtown that continue to serve local residents along with several restaurants and bars that cater towards a more urban clientele including ZZ Top's spot inside Quiznos; Jimmy John's; Dunkin' Donuts; Applebee's; Cafe Paradiso; Player Piano Lounge & Grill - home base for many live music events year round (including summertime shows at Navy Pier); State Theatre Complex housing both theaters - opera/theater options available as well as concerts by popular artists like Metallica and Black Sabbath all occur within walking distance from central business district locations making it easy for locals to get out for some entertainment without feeling too far away from their homes or jobs!

Canton is a city in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,852 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 as a small town on the northwest side of the mouth of the Ottawa River. The name derived from Canandaigua Creek, which flows through Canton and is named for British general and revolutionary John Burgoyne. The first settler in what would become Canton was Elijah Hubbard, who arrived with his family in 1836. He built a cabin on the banks of Canandaigua Creek and named it Hubbardstown after himself and his brother-in-law Elijah Whitehead. Other early residents included James Southerland, David Gentry, John Fetterman, Isaac Greenwood, 2nd Lt. George Hines (later Captured and Killed at Battle of Black Hawk), Ebenezer Griggs (a Revolutionary War veteran), Samuel Huckaby (the father of abolitionist Lucy Huckaby), Levi Richardson (the father of future Ulysses S. Grant) and Rev. Drury Martin (a religious leader). The first post office opened in 1837 and remained open until it closed in 1893. In 1841, Canton became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 30 people; it had no school or government until 1850 when Canton High School opened its doors to students from all over Macomb County. The first mayor was Amos Allen; he served one term from 1840 to1844; then he joined the General Assembly where he served as Speaker from 1850 to1853 before becoming Mayor again in 1861 when township trustees took over local government activities from the General Assembly's Municipal Committee. In 1870–71 Governor John Pecora designated part of Plymouth Township as "Canton Township", providing for its incorporation into Canton by ordinance under that name on December 8th following a referendum held by residents Vacant lots being offered for sale within said township were $1 per acre or $10 per lot if sold at public auction thereby creating an investment opportunity for future growth which led to increased jobs opportunities within said township while also increasing property values thanks to new zoning regulations enacted during that same year codified into state law known as "Plymouth Township Act". [ subsequent annexations have resulted ] Today much of what once made up Plymouth Township has been reincorporated into neighboring municipalities such as Sterling Heights/Lincoln Park/Oak Park/Marshall Fields etc., while other portions remain intact including most notably Brush Valley Farms eastside
