Canton was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States, until the early 21st century when it was annexed by Chicago. It is located on the South Side of Chicago and is bordered to the south by Lake Michigan and to the north by Racine. The population of Canton in 2000 was 20,812. The first settler in what would become Canton was James Fenton who arrived in 1836. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1837, Fenton married Eliza Graywater and they returned to live in Canton after moving from Peoria. The first school in Canton was established in 1840 with nine students attending day School at home while their parents attended evening classes at local churches. A shop also opened soon afterwards which functioned as a community center for social activities such as sewing circles, picnics, dances, etc.. In 1846 Fenton donated land east of Cass Street for an Agricultural College which would become Northwestern University; however due to financial troubles the college never began operations and only conducted research into selected plants before being shut down around 1870. Sometime during this time there also started up a rumor that John Daley had offered money for 3/4 acres adjoining his present-day office building so that he may build an agricultural college here too! This could have been one reason behind Northwestern's decision not to open its doors again until years later when they were finally able to raise enough money from donors (mostly industrialists)to reopen under new leadership including Dr. John Kenneth Galbraith who served as President from 1953-1958. A post office was established at Canton in 1847 and remained active until 1915 when it merged with Park Ridge post office near Forest Glen Prairie northeast of Chicago). From 1865-1868 two sawmills operated along Cass Avenue between State Street (now Wabash Avenue) and Damen Boulevard; these mills are now known as cantonshirevillageantiques. Today most people remember them primarily because one side of each mill has been preserved as an example of late 19th century architecture called "The Tower". An important event that took place during this time happened on October 15th 1863 when three ships - USS Constitution( namesake), USS New York( flagship), SS Texas - collided off shore about 1 mile southeast of present day Kirby Drive; all twentysix aboard Constitution were killed although only four Americans were taken captive: USS midshipman Samuel Fisk (the last American POW held戦後逃脱した際に生まれてきた); Private First Class Charles Sweeny (who became General George Armstrong Custer’s officer commanding 5th Cavalry Regiment living through Custer’s battle at Little Bighorn%);and Petty Officer Third Class Job Stahl (Ulysses S Grant’s aide de camp). All six casualties were eventually released unharmed several weeks later after Ulysses S Grant ordered Commodore Amos Kendall( commander US naval forces west coast Mexico)not pursue any American vessels caught ashore since any capture or trial would entail possible death penalty even if conviction obtained.. While most people today still commemorate this tragic event every year on October 15th commemorating those lost on board Constitution with a public service announcement or parade across town or street activity many forget about exactly what actually happened that day! Onboard USS Constitution some 40 witnesses reported seeing something unidentified floating within sight radius au nd tumbling rapidly towards shore before finally coming ashore without causing any damage... What could have been seen? Some believe it may have been either wreckage from the wrecked ship or debris from another ship that ran aground nearby but no proof exists nor does anyone know for certain what really happened That fateful day over 100 years ago
