The first settler in what would become Canton was Elisha Peale, who founded a trading post on the north side of present day Arlington Heights on November 30, 1814. Peale's Post Office opened on January 1, 1815. The area that became Canton was organized as a town on October 15, 1830 by John Hays from what are now parts of Winnetka and Aurora Township. On December 3rd of that year it was renamed "Canton" after Nathaniel Cantrell who had helped organize viceregal government for Illinois under President Andrew Jackson during the American Civil War. Canton is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 96,032 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Canton is one of the largest cities in Illinois and one of its most populous metropolitan statistical areas. The city's economy is based largely on manufacturing and services, with a small amount of agriculture. The first Europeans to visit what is now Canton were French traders in 1688-89 who established a post beside the Fox River Mouth on the present site of downtown Canton. They called it "Hochelaga". The name may have been inspired by an Indian word meaning "place where corn can be grown." A plaque at Houtman-Cook Library commemorates this early discovery by France. In 1837, John Pierpont Morgan founded JP Morgan & Co., which became one of Chicago's leading banking families along with financier J. P.]Morgan and industrialist Andrew Carnegie. In 1859, he took over ownership of the Chicago Tribune from his brother James Pierpont Morgan Jr.. In 1865, he donated land for a new courthouse which still stands today on Harrison Street in downtown Canton; construction began that year and was completed in 1868. The cornerstone for this building was laid by President Abraham Lincoln during his final campaign stop before leaving office on April 15, 1865 – just two days after Lincoln was assassinated! In 1870, three years after Pierpont Morgan had given money for a new courthouse and begun construction himself (along with five other incorporations), he died suddenly while out riding near Joliette (now Joliet) Lake shoreline; his will stipulated that all property within corporate limits should come to his widow Janet but she never married her late husband's estate trustee John Pierpont Morgan Jr.. Janet divided everything among their six children – including their mother Maria Pierpontine (1847-1927). Today part of Northwestern Mutual Tower complex adjacent to Lake Michigan forms the backdrop for many photosynthesis experiments conducted by plant scientists at Northwestern University since its founding as Evanston College in 1895 under then president David Starr Jordan (1920-2002). The original business district around Harrison & Erie streets developed into what is now known as Downtown Canton due to increased industrial activity outside of Northgate Mall starting around 1940s when local automakers such as Ford Motor Company opened plants there throughout much of America during World War II due to shortages caused by war production taxes levied by Federal government
Canton, Illinois was founded in 1847 as a town on the Indiana side of the Great Lakes. The town quickly developed into a major agricultural center, and by 1860 it had over 12,000 residents. In 1871, the United States government organized what is now Illinois as a Territory of Missouri under President Abraham Lincoln. Canton became part of the new state of Missouri and continued to grow rapidly. By 1900, it had over 36,000 residents and was one of the largest towns in Missouri.
