Canton is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 41,746 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in DuPage County and the fifth-largest city in Illinois. The metropolitan area of Canton includes all of DuPage County and most of Kane County as well as parts of northeastern Cook County. The first human beings to live in what is now Canton were Native American Sioux who called it "Kahknaa." The name comes from an Ojibwa word meaning "place where water flows quickly," which may have been why this area was chosen for settlement by early migrants from eastern Canada. In 1814, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail founded the town on land they had acquired from John Quinn, one of the original landowners in what would become Du Page County. They named it after Andrew Johnson's home state of Virginia. Morse & Vail built a small village around their store and post office until 1825 when they outgrew their land holdings and moved to new locations on both sides of Chicago River (northwest). They returned to Kahknaa in 1828 but left again after only a year due to financial difficulties caused by the Panic of 1829. In 1830, another group of pioneers led by Hiram Wright arrived from Ohio and located near present day Elmira, New York – making this perhaps the first cross-country journey by wagonload across North America made without support from any organized government or capital cities! After 1½ years living among Native Americans at Kahonahka (now Elmira), these settlers decided that there was no suitable site for them within 100 miles (160 km) of their original base camp so they continued westward along riverbank until they reached what is now Chicago on November 14, 1830. From here they began construction on Prairie du Chien's first courthouse: erected between October 15th and November 16th 1830 using local sandstone quarried nearby! 2 more pioneer groups followed soon afterwards: George Stephenson's Menasha Party (April 4–10, 1831) consisting mostly Englishmen including his brother Robert Stephenson; and Simon Cameron's Albany Party (December 12–17th 1830), also composed entirely of Englishmen but with some French Canadians among its members! These groups finally reached downtown Chicago on April 6th 1831 just before winter setin
