Gun target history in Canton, Illinois began in 1892 when a group of local men pooled their resources and bought a piece of property on the east side of town. The original target field was located at the corner of Elm and State Streets. There were two types of targets used at that time; standing targets, which were made from logs or other sturdy materials, and firing targets, which consisted of a small hole drilled in the center of a piece of wood or metal that could be hit with a ball to simulate shooting at an animal. In 1907, gun range owner John W. Healey donated land adjacent to his property on Elm Street for handgun training purposes. This allowed residents within Canton limits to shoot handguns without having to go outside the city limits. Canton is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. The site of the first permanent European settlement in what is now Illinois was on the south bank of the Chicago River near the mouth of the Calumet River. In 1803, John Taylor founded a small community called Mount Prospect on land he had acquired from the federal government as part of his Purchase of Northwest Territory. By 1830, all but three families living in Mount Prospect had moved to Canton when they were offered land grants by General Anthony Wayne and Congressman James K. Polk in response to their recommendation that Illinois be admitted as a state. In 1848, after years of discussion and planning by various groups led by Samuel Tilden and others, Canton became an incorporated village with a board of trustees responsible for providing services such as waterworks and roads. The village slogan was "Equal Rights Under Law." On November 3, 1868 – one year after his election as Mayor – Alfred Soper erected the first stone building in Canton when he opened the new courthouse which served until 1906 when it was replaced by a more modern structure nearby. The opening of Ford Motor Company's plants downstream along Lake Michigan inspired development along what is now State Street into what is now downtown Canton (then known as Montgomery Street). This area around State Street included much later growth into what is today Midtown Chicago. In 1907–08 work began on east-west streets running through downtown Canton to connect with Michigan Avenue (now Wacker Drive) northward. This project became known as Main Street/Wacker Drive; it remains one-third complete today and forms one corner of Millennium Park adjacent to Soldier Field northwestward from Downtown Chicago
In 1815, the Illinois General Assembly created the township of Canton in Sangamon County. The town was named for John G. Canton, a United States congressman from Ohio who had served in the Illinois legislature. It Development took place over a period of about 25 years and began with small settlements on family farms. In 1846, the first railroads reached Canton and soon it became an important community on the Chicago-St. Louis Railway. The growth of Canton was due to its location at one of the few crossroads in central Illinois and its role as a transportation hub for goods and passengers between Chicago and St. Louis
