Canton is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Canton was founded in 1834 by settlers from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The current school districts were formed in 1912 and 1974 respectively. The first settler in Canton was John Hargrave (1796-1872). He purchased land east of the present day intersection of Interstate 80 and Yates Street on what is now the south side of Canton's downtown square from John Kinzie (1793-1851), one of the original proprietors of Kane County. Canton became a village in 1835 when it combined with several other smaller settlements to form a new township under the leadership of Jacob Weiser (1800-1864). In 1856, at which time it had a population of 476 people; however, it declined rapidly due to heavy mortality from smallpox and yellow fever caused by American Indians living near its boundaries. In 1912, after years of effort by Township trustees George Fenton and Harry Wessels, Canton's first school district was organized with 11 schools: three public schools (grades 1-4), three private academies (grades 5-8), and two parochial schools for African Americans (grades 9-12). In 1970, following passage of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act Amendments of 1970 (), all but one high school within each township were required to become Fullerton High Schools (). As a result, much older buildings which had served as elementary/middle/junior high schools were demolished or converted into full secondary education facilities. Today only half adozen buildings remain outbuildings that once accommodated primary/secondary students:/ these are used for storage or for community meetings held inside Municipal Hall Building on State Street since 1964 as well as during Special events such as Apple Festival Parade on October 3rd every year

He named his new town after himself and his brother-in-law Reuben Gold Rush miner Amos Stowe. In 1830, John Canton's wife died; he buried her there in an unmarked grave until 1868 when he moved her body to Arlington Cemetery for burial with other pioneers from Kane County. In 1836, Amos Stowe built the first sawmill on the Kankakee River which became one of the most important businesses in town during that time period; it still exists today and produces lumber products. The early years of Canton were also marked by heavy manufacturing such as brewing beer and making wagons; however, this industry slowly began to decline following World War II due to competition from more efficient methods of production overseas. However, since 2000s there has been a revival of this sector with growth of online sales and restaurant options as well as redevelopment projects (such as an $80 million project to update and renovate downtown).
Canton was first settled in 1814 by the Potawatomi tribe. The town was named after General Anthony Wayne, who fought in the War of 1812. In 1837, the town was burned by a group of Indians led by Chief Tecumseh. The townsite was rebuilt and renamed Canton in honor of General John P. Overton, who had helped protect Illinois during the Mexican-American War.
