Canton is home to two professional sports teams: the Rockford IceHogs (AHL) and the Chicago Blackhawks ( NHL ). The ice hockey team is one of three professional teams located within Illinois' Great Lakes region; other major League teams include the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs . Baseball is also popular here with both minor league clubs playing out their seasons here before making their way back into metropolitan areas across North America

In 1846, when Illinois became a state, Canton reverted back to its original form as an incorporated village with a population of just 20 people. However, by 1850 it had outgrown its smalltown status and began developing into a thriving commercial center with three hotels (the John F Kennedy Hotel, the Masonic Temple Hotel and the City Hall Hotel), five stores (including one owned by Abraham Lincoln), two churches (one Congregationalist and one Baptist) and several mills including those operated by Wm Hine & Co., Elisha Goodrich & Sons lumberyard, Joseph Noyes flour mill (later Flour Mill No. 1), Hiram Wright's sawmill (later Wright Sawmills) and Edward Lunsford's gristmill (now known as First National Grist Mill). During late 19th century America's Great Migration many Northern European Americans settled in Canton looking for new opportunities for work during difficult times following the Civil War etc.; many attracted from German-speaking areas of Europe along with Irish immigrants from Ireland also settling there during that time period contributing greatly both materially and culturally to this burgeoning community known locally as "The Ghetto." Many excellent restaurants still remain open today within walking distance or even closer - some dating back more than 50 years!
The township of Canton was organized in 1809. The first settler, Isaac Cole, arrived in what is now Canton on a small boat and named it after his home town of Lancaster, England. The village of Canton was founded by the following year and quickly grew to become a important center for trade and industry. By 1820, the village had a population of over 100 people. In 1824, the township was created from parts of Batavia Township and Griggs Township. In 1834, the area that would later become Canton was burned by American Indians during the Illinois-Indiana War. The fire destroyed most of the town but also left behind a number of ruins which remain today as part of the community's history. Aftermaths such as this helped to spur development in the town and make it one of America's most successful small towns.
