Canton is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Canton was founded in 1847 and became a municipality in 1865. The city is located on the west bank of the Chicago River. Canton's rich history can be found in its namesake – cantonensis meaning "to come from (a place)". Canton was named for two French colonists who died during the American Revolution: Pierre-André de la Salle and his brother Jean Baptiste de La Salle. When France lost their North American possessions during the revolution, they appointed both men as commissioners to oversee their remaining colonies in Canada and Louisiana. In 1785, after weeks of surveying and debating, they chose what is now Canton as their new capital; it would remain so until 1847 when Jeffersonville was chosen as the new capital due to its proximity to Chicago. The first settler in what is now Canton was James Kapp; he arrived with his family there on October 5th, 1847 just days before statehood was granted to Illinois. He built a log cabin near present day State Street and Wabash Avenue which served as his home until he died in 1888 at age 83 years old. Another early settler, John Hinebaugh also arrived around this time and built a small cabin on what is now South Michigan Avenue close to present day Wrightwood Drive/Route 66 east of I-55 (now US 20). From these initial pioneers comes one of Canton's most significant cultural references – The odd Fellows meetinghouse still stands today within easy walking distance of downtown! And even though many residents originally hailed from upstate New York or nearby Pennsylvania towns such as Reading or Erie (the latter being only about 25 miles away), many continue to visit this area for its high quality restaurants, nightlife and shopping opportunities! As early as 1848 local newspapers were reporting on various business opportunities available throughout Kane County; among these were agricultural land sales (which had become more common due toimprovements made by Andrew Carnegie), lumbering operations ( principally through John Pheasant & Company ), real estate concerns (including that of Amos Kendall), transportation options including wagon roads leading out into Cook County fromPeoria Junction Ferry Road southward across Lake Michigan then southwest alongpresent day I-88 all the way north past Porter Springs before terminating atGreenwich Village Landing northwest of town center) etc….. By 1850 several churches had been built in canton with Revs John Murchison (First Presbyterian) presiding over those located around Courthouse Square where services were held daily from Monday morning until Saturday evening… other prominent clerics associated with this congregation included Revs David Cogan(Congregationalist), Ebenezer Cook(Episcopalian), Jno Smeaton(Unitarian) among others! The town's first school opened September 3rd 1850 under auspices of Dr Benjamin Rushwho donated a large lot adjacent to Courthouse Square for use as an academy…. This institution functioned intermittently until October 15th 1870 when it burned down due some defective construction work!! One possible reason why this school never caught on may have been because enrollment initially consisted almost entirelyof white males only!! In March 1861 when Confederate General Robert E Lee came through central Illinois looking for troops campaign against Union forces near Fordowell Summit he passed through Canton en route back home via Peoria Junction Ferry Road….. After briefly halting his march at Greeneville Landing prior to continuing onward he reached Fordowell Summit without encountering any military opposition!!! In 1862 following Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation all black Americans within Rebel territory were required by law to leave their homes immediately!!!!! Many black residents did not comply…….. Consequently between April 12th thru May 2nd Confederate snipers fired onto numerous unarmed black citizensarrowing them off into ghettos clustered around major streets like Canal street etc… Eventually leading white Northerners turned upon their own people resulting in bloody clashes known locally simply as “The Civil War”….. Finally beginning November 16th 1865 Union General Ambrose Burnside destroyed rebel fortifications along Cass Corridor thus culminating hostilities which lasted three months………. overall more than 50% of all deaths occurred during The Civil War!!!! Some 300 killed outright while another 1000+ perished from Disease………………….. As blacks continued exodus southeastward towards Armour Heights detailed surveys showed thousands more African Americans living withinUnion Territory boundaries than ever before!!! Lastly we should mention that even though nearly one third Ofall adult male residential deaths occurred during The Civil War deceased husbands survived frequently taking careofTheir families………… Overall 1/3 OF ALL AMERICAN DYNASTY ENDED WITHIN THE STATE OF ILENOWWWIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Canton, Illinois is a small city located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 8,569 as of the 2010 census. Canton has been inhabited by people since the time of the Drury Settlement. The first post office in Canton was established on October 5, 1851. In 1868, Canton became an incorporated village and had a land area of 4 square miles. It lost its charter status in 1968 but continued to exist as a separate municipality until it merged with Kane County on January 1, 2001. Canton's history can be traced back to 1810 when John Green (1781-1853) and his family settled in what is now the community of Canfield on Hennepin Creek. They were followed by other pioneers over the next few years and by 1814 there were five families living in what is now Canton. The town began to grow slowly at first because there wasn't much available for development; however, over time it became an important trade center due to its location on the east side of Hennepin Creek between Chicago and Rockford and its easy access to transportation including railroads. The early residents of Canton were farmers who raised corn, beans, pork chops and other vegetables; they also built grain elevators which brought goods from Chicago downriver these days known as "the canals." By 1870 there were about 100 people living in Canton with one store and three homes; however, this growth stopped once factories opened up along the north side of Hennepin Creek which led to increased competition for job opportunities among residents. In 1915 when World War I started many local businesses closed because they couldn't compete with larger companies that were making money overseas; however soon after hostilities ended things picked up again with many new businesses opening up such as a grocery store and two banks - oneowned by Andrew Jablonski (1865-1936) who served as Mayor from 1919 until his death and another owned by William Fenton (1867-1948), who served as President pro tempore from 1922 until his death during World War II before becoming Clerk of State under Governor Adlai Stevenson (1912-1966). Additionally nearby Decatur opened its own factory producing radios which helped revive canton's economy during those difficult times.; thus helping make canton an important part of south central Kane County during those dark years leading up to World War II . During World War II Canton experienced some terrible events including several bombings which destroyed most of the downtown business district as well as leaving more than 50 people dead or injured;; all thanks to American bomber planes flying overhead! Unfortunately for locals like myself most everything went backTo normal afterwards although things have changed slightly since then due mainly to demographic changes resulting from immigration into our city over the last few decades.; nevertheless much remains unchanged about what made our town so special during those pivotal years!

It became a town in 1836 and was named for John Quincy Adams, who served as President of the United States from 1825 to 1829. The first post office was established in Canton in 1840.
