There is no doubt that the firearm hat has a long and varied history in Canton, Illinois. When they arrived at the home, they found that all of Joe's family had left to take cover beneath the house. As they began their search for Joe's family members, they discovered several rifles and pistols lying around where he was supposedly hiding. Captain Millington ordered his men not to stop looking until they found everyone involved in this event- including Joe himself- so that he could question them about what happened during their stay at his home. Several days later, after some further investigation by Captain Millington's men into this event, they located all of those responsible for this occurrence- includingJoe himself- and took them into custody without any incident. This event helped establishes firearms usage within the military in Canton as well as giving rise to gun stores such as Captain John Millingtons Rifle Shop on State Street downtown where civilians could purchase guns too. Firearms usage also increased throughout much of the Midwest due largely to militia needs during these times period which sometimes led to violence between militias and civilians outside of towns or cities (such as Springfield). This type of warfare often escalated into full scale battles where militias would square off against each other using both weapons and manpower (much like today’s wars). In 1865 while living in Springfield I visited an old fortification called “Fort Atkinson” located near Fort Dearborn on State Street near East Market Street taken over by the federal government following Vandalia’s insurrection leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration. While inside Fort Atkinson I met one Mr., who mentioned having seen a man dressed all in black carrying a rifle & shield down Main Streets in Springfield just before dark...I believe this person was either Major General Samuel Jourdan or Confederate General Robert Ewell It should be noted here that most reports describing gunfire happening outside settlements during these times periods come from sources who were not eyewitnesses themselves but rather informants working for local authorities at the time who were able to document events observed or experienced by others close enoughto witnessing them

Canton is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Canton was founded by fur traders in 1818 as a station on the Great Western Railroad. The town name comes from an English word meaning " Valley of Pines." The first settler in Canton was John K. Silliman, who arrived in 1819 and built his own cabin on the banks of the Fox River. In 1840, James W. Mason opened a store and post office here with fellow settlers Isaac Henson and Benjamin Wilson. By 1847, there were 11 stores and 48 families in Canton. In 1849, John Hardin started a gristmill that became one of the leading mills in Kane County; he also operated a sawmill and wagon factory. In 1860, Samuel Fenton organized what would become the first black Baptist church in Kane County when he built a chapel on West Potosi Street near present-day State Road 59A (Kankakee Avenue). The congregation held services for about 25 years before disbanding because of lack of space or financial support from other churches. A few weeks after its founding, African Americans began to attend white schools through local missionary efforts led by Revs Jesse Lipscomb and Lewis Dixon Jr., both Methodists
Canton was founded in 1824 as a village in the Illinois Territory. It was named after the canton of Switzerland, which at that time included most of what is now Illinois. The first settler in Canton was John Parks, who arrived in 1825. The village grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of 350 people. In 1834, the US Congress passed a bill creating the state of Illinois and giving Canton exclusive jurisdiction over all land east of the Mississippi River. As part of this new state, Canton became one of its five townships. The town quickly became known for its fertile agricultural land and its strategic location near transportation routes connecting Chicago with other states and Canada. By 1850, Canton had a population of 1,500 people and it continued to grow until it reached 2,000 by 1870. During this time, Canton also became an important center for education; it was home to one of the first public schools in Illinois and soon boasted several universities including Drake University, then called Ripley College (later renamed Indiana State University), opened in 1854; and Beloit Collegeopened in 1868). In 1886, when neighboring Des Plaines County merged into Cook County,[1] Canton lost much of its importance as an educational center but continued to be popular with residents because it had many small businesses and excellent access to fresh water resources.[2] However, during World War II these resources were used to produce munitions plants outside the town limits[3] which led to some diminution in population growth rates[4]. Afterward there has been meager growth due largely to suburbanization.[5] Today there are only a few hundred residents living within city limits while most activities take place outside those boundaries.
