The history of ammunition in Canton, Illinois can be traced back to the early 1800s. Ammunition was an important part of military drills and battles as it provided soldiers with cannon balls, shot, and grenades that could be used in warfare. Ammunition was also used for hunting and sporting purposes. In 1812, a store called The Arsenal opened its doors in Canton. It was the first store in the town and it served as a center for local trade. The store sold artillery rounds, bullets, shotgun shells, musket balls, pistols, knives, and other firearms accessories. In 1814-1815, a bandanna factory was built in Canton by Samuel Hesseltine. This factory produced bandannas to help protect soldiers during battle. By 1817-1818, the town had a population of around 100 people. A rifle shop opened up in Canton in 1827 by Jacob Grimmelius. This shop offered customers rifles and gunpowder products such as Shotgun powder (chamber shot), shotgun shot (shot pellets), grenadiers (grenades), shotguns, pistols etc.. In 1830-31 alone, the shop sold over 1 million rounds of ammunition! In 1840-41 an apple orchard was established on land donated by George Wurster near the junction of State Route 522 and US Highway 51. This orchard yielded many apples that were turned into cartridges for cannons and guns! In 1865-66 an armory was built on Main Street near where State Route 522 now intersects US Highway 51 after being moved from its original location off State Route 22 about two miles away from the original armory site due to increasing highway traffic! After years of development at this location; it finally became operational on November 4th 1870! The armory held 3 floors with room for 50 guns including 10 cannons/calibers! During its existence; it hosted numerous foot patrols during law enforcement operations outside of Canton! Today remnants of this structure still stand today across from SR522 northbound just east of city limits

Canton is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Canton is located on the east side of the county and near the southern border of Cook County. The first settler in Canton was James Braidwood, who arrived in 1815 and laid out a town site on what is now Loop Road and Fullerton Boulevard. A post office called Canton was established in 1827, and it remained in operation until it closed in 1911. The name for canton derives from "Harrison Township". In 1838, John Hargrave settled herein with his family and named his new township after Lord Northumberland's headquarters at Harrisonburg va., where he had been living since moving to this country from England two years earlier. In 1840–41 George Stephenson built a canal here to convey goods between Cairo (now DeKalb) Ill., on the north side of the river, and Quincy (now Rockford), on the south side; but this enterprise failed because of lack of money. In 1846 Isaac Brock founded Holdenville as an agricultural colony near what is now Lockport Ill., when he purchased 5AD Block 624 within present-day Canton limits from Jno. Hargrave for $5 per acre ($102 per square mile). Brock turned Holdenville into an important center for trade with other parts of Illinois due to its location midway between Peoria Ill./Chicago and Rockford Ill./Chicago along I-90. John Davenport Sr.. began farming in about 1830 around what is now Wicker Park neighborhood on Chicago's Northwest Side. He donated some land that became Shawangunk Country Club which still exists today as one variation of golf course which opened its membership to all citizens regardless social or economic backgrounds starting back before World War II... Davenport also donated land bounded by South State Street (northwest corner), West Randolph Street (southwest corner), Harlem Avenue (east corner), Cicero Avenue (northeast corner) – today’s Kane Park – Clinton Hill Cemetery adjacent thereto beginning at lot number 12 below street level just west of current day Kankakee Ave…. Mr..Davenport also erected a private school house here known as “The School House” which stood until 1886 when it burned down…three blocks northwest thereof stands another early brick school building known as “Methodist Episcopal School” which served grades PreK-12th until 1955 when it too burned down along with most other buildings associated with that church during McCarthyism era Cleveland Heights Historical Society Collection photo circa 1935

Canton, Illinois is a city in central Illinois, United States. The population was 20,417 at the 2010 census. Canton has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than three thousand years. The first European to visit the area was a Frenchman named Jean-Baptiste de Bougainville on July 3, 1795. He claimed the now known as Cass County and named it after his old friend and mentor, Marquis de Lafayette. In 1804, Captain John Pope surveyed the area and submitted a map of what would become Canton. On November 12 of that year, an Act of Congress created Cass County following the Louisiana Purchase from France and designated part of it as Quincy Township in Crawford County in accordance with that purchase agreement between Great Britain and France. The town of Quincy was platted on December 5th, 1834 by James Waddell under the name "Canton". The first post office opened in Canton on October 10th 1830. The name may have been derived from "Canandaigua" which means "the place where water flows abundantly." At this time there were only two small towns in Crawford County: Peoria and Warsaw; however when Quincy incorporated as a city it became one of five original cities within Cook County! By 1860 there were over 30 settlements in Cass County including Canton with 7 churches (4Methodist & 3 Presbyterian) 6 schools (3 public & 3 private) 2 Observatories (2 national observatories) 1 mill (1 gristmill & 1 sawmill) 4 stores(3 grocery stores & 2 drugstores) 1 Masonic lodge
The town of Canton, Illinois was founded in 1837 by the James and Nancy Fenton family. The town was named after the canton, Switzerland, where they originally came from. The Fenton family ran a mill in the town for many years. In 1868, Canton became a village and later a city.
