Airguns have been around for many years in Canton, Illinois. In 1892, a group of men from the town founded the first airgun club in the state of Illinois. The club met to discuss ways to improve airguns and shot guns. They elected a president and created rules and regulations for their sport. In 1916, Canton Airgun Club organized its first annual meeting which was attended by 10 people. There was talk about opening an air rifle range in the town. The club decided not to do this because they found it difficult to get insurance for their ranges. In 1927, Airgun Sportsman’s Association was formed with six members in Canton. This organization helped promote airguns and created rules and regulations for shooting competitions across the United States. In 1951, Canton Airgun Club merged with other clubs in the area to form International Sporting Rifle Association (ISRA). This organization helped promote airguns all over the world and developed new rules and regulations for shooting competitions. The current incarnation of ISRA is made up of organizations located throughout North America including Canada, Mexico, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam and more!

The town was once known as "The Birthplace of Automobiles." Canton is also home to some of the country's worst air quality – ranking number two nationally for ozone pollution – but it has been making significant strides to improve air quality since 2009.

Canton is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Canton was Solomon Harmon, who arrived in 1829. Harmon and his family built a log cabin on the present site of Canton High School in 1830. The Harmon family also farmed land around their cabin until they sold it to George Houghton in 1834. In 1835, Nathaniel Hawthorne purchased property near Canton from George Houghton for $1 per acre. Hawthorne named his land Prairie du Chien after the Prairie du Chien Indian reservation where he had earlier been born and raised. In 1836, John Stephenson moved to Canton from New York with his wife and two children and began to farm land around their home on State Street by the railroad tracks. He also started a store there which continued until 1860 when he sold his interest to Amos Davenport Jr.. Davenport founded Des Plaines County Board of Commissioners in 1838 and served as its first president until his death in 1865. In 1840, Jonathan Edwards settled near Canton on acres donated by him and opened a small grocery business called "Nathaniel's Store". In 1847 an Act of Congress designated 20% of all public lands within Illinois as "Canton Township" subject to spin-off into other townships within Kane County including those around Chicago if necessary due to demographic growth within that county during that time period (the so-called "Lincoln Township" designation having been given to Aurora). When Daniel Webster became Vice President of the United States in 1850, he traveled through Illinois looking for new territory for sale (he had decided not run for office that year). On July 15th he published an advertisement offering 640 acres (248 hectares) east of Menomonee Falls called "Tiptop Hills". The township was organized on October 1st under Act No 2110 – known as the Webster Purchase – with Daniel Webster presiding over its creation as its first mayor. On December 3rd general James Shields accepted an offer from Samuel Tilden for 113 acres (45 hectares) southeast of Buffalo Grove which Tilden called "Hollow Grove". This acquisition added about 2 square miles (.8 km²) to Canton's total size at that time; it would become oneofTilden's major real estate holdings during his career as governor of New York City). On February 22nd 1861, Confederate forces burned down Danforth’s Hotel located several blocks northwest of the original courthouse building now occupied by Weiland Middle School across State Street from what is now Freedom Hallowed Cemetery - a fire which destroyed much valuable property including many homespun cotton cloth fabric samples seized during Union military raids into southern Illinois during this same period.( See image below .) This event marked oneofthe earliest examplesofcasualties causedbycivilians assisting Union troopsduringthe American Civil War.) After years of debate among local government officials over whether or notto annex neighboring Bloomington into Kane County based upon growing industrial activity there since1860 or instead retain separate municipal control over both villages due to differing social dynamics primarily centered around agriculture(See map above ),and commercial development(See photos below), Cannelandoknewitwould be annexedbyKaneCountyin1865.(See map above .) On April 4th 1865 residents voted 6-2 against annexation into Kane County while 5% supported it based off community surveys taken prior thereto.) After years spent strugglingtokeepcantonAliveduringtheGreatChicago Fire OF 1893 & 1886 affecting infrastructure such as schools & businesses alike; Mayor Hiram A “Happy Jack” Farnsworth declared cantonal status on January 12th 1907 following ratification by voters taking place just before World War I; becoming fully operative beginning September 1st 1907.) Canton was founded in 1824 by Noah Webster and others as a small village on the banks of the Illinois River. In 1827, the first courthouse was built, and in 1830, the first school was opened. The townspeople developed a vigorous trading economy based on agriculture and commerce. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses in Canton. In 1846, Canton became a city with its own government.
