In 1885–86, local citizens built a water tower to provide drinking water for their city (the first municipally-owned water system in Illinois). On July 25th of that year Mayor John Ahern announced that he would not run for re-election because he did not have enough votes; however he resigned effective August 1st so he could be succeeded by Alderman John Dorney who also refused to run for reelection because he did not have enough votes either . On November 5th 1886 resident George Henson donated land east of Main Street between Dexter Avenue and Elmhurst Avenue (now Clinton Drive) to become what is now Lake View Cemetery; this donation allowed cemetery construction without having to pay property taxes until 1912 when Cemetery District No. 2 became mandatory due to changes in zoning law which limited cemetery building density along Elmhurst Avenue near Clinton Drive – an event which has been documented archaeologically through surveys conducted at various points throughout Calumet City since then ).
