In 1878, the Calumet City Agricultural Society was organized with the goal of improving and developing local agricultural resources. In 1916, the society erected a machine shed on the east side of town to help with storage and transportation of equipment used in agriculture. In 1922, they established a garage on West Main Street to provide storage for farm machinery. The society also built a small poultry pen in 1926. In 1935, they erected a new barn on East Market Street. In 1954, they added an engine house onto their property which still stands today as part of their agricultural museum. The society continued to operate until 1972 when it disbanded due to financial problems. Since that time, the building has been used as office space by several different businesses in Calumet City.

George Calumet found that the location would make good land for planting cotton because of its fertile soil and low water table. The site where today's downtown sits had been part of what is now known as Indianola Creek before it was platted out by early settlers as part of their effort to settle this area which straddled both sides of Chicago's then only natural border - between Indiana and Illinois. In 1835, business began operations at what is now First National Bank building on South State Street just west of Waterman Avenue; this building still stands and currently houses the Community Development Block (CDB) office complex built in 2002 by Pritzker Prize winning architecture firm Skidmore & Mather LLP Architects Incorporated (SM). At that time, First National Bank served as one of two banks licensed to do business within Cook County under an act passed by Congress during Andrew Johnson's presidency – also known as "the Banking Act". In addition to serving as a keystone bank for developing this frontier community, First National Bank quickly became an engine behind early civic boosterism including donations towards brick masons construction projects throughout town such as founding of Grange Hall Cemetery (now home to Stritch University) shortly thereafter; gracing calendars with pioneering endorsements like those given annually by noted local journalist Elijah Parish Howe – most notably “A Bold New Beginning” published October 11th [1836] weeks prior to Mayor John Simpson’s inauguration... In 1852, following Illinois' admission into the United States as a nation, Calumet City became part of Chicago. At that time it had a population estimated at just over 10 residents. By 1870 there were over 1,000 people living in town and it had become an important transportation center for goods moving between Chicago and other parts of Illinois. In 1916 Mayor William Ladd appointed Harry Hays as mayor pro tempore due to conflict within Chicago's political establishment over who would serve as mayor for one year only before being elected to succeed Ladd term-limited sulfuric acid produced from coal mine explosions killed 47 people when it exploded outside Crystal Beach Sunday night
The city of Calumet City, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Nicholas and Anna Cook. The town was named after the family's home, "Calumet House." The first settler in the area was John Hawkins. In 1848, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the founding of a town in central Illinois. The towns of Calumet City and Aurora were founded on December 3, 1848. In 1851, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad (C&NW) built a line through the town. This led to an increase in traffic and development around Calumet City. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in the town. In that year, also, Calumet City became one of fifteen townships organized into two districts for election purposes under state legislation called "An Act to establish Districts for Election." In 1871-72, voters approved a new railroad station at what is now downtown Calumet City. This station served as the nucleus of what would become today's downtown area. The arrival of automobiles allowed for more shopping and business growth around this new station. The Panic of 1893 caused economic hardship for many people in Illinois during that time period; however, things began to improve following World War I when profits from manufacturing increased across all aspects of society throughout America. With prosperity came social improvement as well—housing prices began falling throughout America while wages rose overall due to growing productivity within industry overall; this helped support burgeoning suburban populations throughout much of North America during this time frame as well!
