Calumet City, Illinois is a small city located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County and home to the Kane County Courthouse and many other government buildings. In 1847, Calumet City became the first village in Kane County when it was organized from part of Aurora. The first settler in Calumet City was John Fenton who arrived there in 1836. He built a cabin on the east side of town near what is now Elmhurst Rd. Fenton's cabin is still standing and can be visited today as part of the Kane County Historical Society's exhibit "Fenton's First Village". In 1847, John Hargrave moved to Calumet City from Aurora and started a gristmill which provided essential services for the village until 1865 when a new flour mill was built on State Street by George Whetstone. The gristmill continued to be operational until it burned down in 1928. In 1868, wagonloads of potatoes were brought into Calumet City from nearby Morrisania by Sarah Lamb (daughter of Solomon Lamb) on her way to sell them at Chicago marketplaces. She named her small community after her father-in-law, James Kappeler, who had sent her supplies during his visit to America during1863-64. At that time, all villages in Kane County were established by ordnance from Fort Dearborn and consisted only of men with no buildings or property - they relied entirely upon donations from their citizens for their survival! The first post office in Calumet City was established on April 12th, 1870 by Jno Herron with Wm Atherton as its clerk; this building still stands today as part of the historical society's exhibits inside the old courthouse annexe (the former school house). The first settler to live here was Dr. James Auld who arrived in 1836 with his family from Edinburgh, Scotland. He operated a smallpox clinic and soon developed into one of Chicago's leading white businessmen and civic leaders; he donated land to establish what is now downtown Calumet City and also helped found the Lyceum Club (now the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign) on State Street north of Michigan Avenue in 1841. Alderman John Dolan played an important role in developing this growing town as its first mayor from 1861 to 1865; during that time it became one of the largest cities east of the Mississippi River without having its own local police force or fire department! Afterward Dolan served as Mayor of Chicago before retiring to run unsuccessfully for office again in 1924 until he finally died aged 88 years old at his home here on December 17th, 1951
