Calumet City is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Calumet City was founded in 1847 by John Ralston and his family as a small settlement on the east side of the Chicago River. Afterland township was organized in 1853 and Calumet City became a part of it. In 1874, Indian Territory was created and Calumet City seceded from Andover Township to form its own entity within that territory. A post office called "Calumet" was established in 1875, but it ceased operations in 1901. In 1915, the city's maximum population had grown to 3,500 people when World War I began; however, during World War II it only reached 1,000 residents due to wartime shortages in food and housing. At its height as an independent city, CalumETC employed over 120 people at various manufacturing plants including munitions companies such as Alcoa and Bethlehem Steel; also many government jobs such as those for police officers and firefighters which were highly coveted during wartime because they provided security and stability for civilians while also providing essential services such as education for children. However with economic recession beginning to hit America during the late 1960s-early 1970s throughout much of Europe (and other parts of North America), this boom period ended abruptly with no major new development taking place until recently; what has occurred since then is largely characterized by increased crime rates along with decreasing levels of job opportunities for local citizens although there are some new developments which have revived downtown businesses/the arts district around State Street which used to be known as "The Hood".

At that time, only about 10% of Chicago's population lived within its limits; the rest lay inside Kane County proper or were located in incorporated areas such as Winnetka and Lake Forest Park. During World War II, many residents left for military service because of rationing; however, most returned home shortly before the war ended with Japan's surrender in 1945 . After World War II began peacetime growth resumed although at a slower pace than during wartime years because so many people had left for work opportunities elsewhere in America or abroad including California where much manufacturing now takes place

The population of the city increased rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to immigration from Europe and Asia. The auto industry played a significant role in the growth of Calumet City, with factories providing jobs for many residents. Today, the city is a vibrant cultural and commercial center with a population of over 100,000 people.
