Calumet City is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located about 20 miles (32 km) west of Chicago. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. Calumet City has been the home of the McCormick ethanol plant since its construction in 1927. The town was founded by James Ewing and his brother-in-law George Hensley on November 1, 1847 as part of a large land grant from the United States to John C. McCormick and others. The first settler arrived in what is now Calumet City on October 16, 1848. The new milltown quickly grew into an agricultural center with corn, wheat and other crops being grown for export to Europe. In 1907, the McCormick ethanol plant was built in downtown Calumet City following a $5 million investment by Jethro Tull Incorporated and its president Charles Wohlgemuth Sr.. The plant produced fuel oil until it closed in 2009 due to economic decline throughout Illinois. In 1917, German immigration led to the founding of a Lutheran congregation in Calumet City which continues to minister today; that same year also saw the incorporation of Village No. 2 which lies adjacent to present day Calumet City proper but did not become part of the city limits until 1959 when it amalgamated with Village No. 1 following annexation proceedings conducted by both villages over several years beginning in 1944). The city’s economy revolves around agriculture and trade; however, much progress has been made recently including some new architecture projects inside or near the old milltown center dating back more than 60 years including one completed just last month that can be seen from Interstate 55 just east of town limits - this building is called “Old Main” and it is said that its design was inspired by similar structures found across America during this time period such as those at Indiana University Bloomington known as “Harem Halls” or “Old Main House”
The Calumet City, Illinois area was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the 17th century. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded Indiana and burned down the village of Cahokia due to its support of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Potawatomi were forced out of their land and replaced by the Shawnee in 1813. In 1814, a group of settlers from Kentucky founded what is now Joliet Township on the north side of Chicago River. The township was named for John F. McCormick, a Kentucky congressman who had come to Illinois in 1814 to survey land for a railroad. McCormick's group built the first permanent house in Joliet Township on State Street in 1816. By 1827, all but two of Joliet Township's residents had originated fromKentucky or northern Virginia. In 1836, Calumet City was organized as a town within Cook County by Order No. 7887-1836 (dated December 2, 1840). It became an independent city on February 14, 1889 when Cook County merged with Chicago into one unified jurisdiction under Mayor George Bogan (D). On October 15, 1912 (eleven days after Chicago's incorporation as a city), Calumet City lost its charter as part of the consolidation process that followed Chicagos annexation into larger municipalities; it re-emerged as an unincorporated community within Chicago effective November 1 that year.
