Gun targets have been a part of Calumet City, Illinois history for as long as there have been guns. The firstTarget in the city was erected in 1827 by Captain John Haggerty. It was located on the northwest corner of Main and State Streets. A new Target building was erected on this site in 1883 and used until 1944 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1892, Captain James Waddell established a Gunnery School at 508 West Washington Street and began to teach target shooting to children from Calumet City Elementary School. In 1898, Major General Winfield Scott Hancock organized a military camp near Calumet City and offered free target practice to the public. This led to the establishment of an annual summer gunnery festival which has continued annually since then. The modern day Target has been established in 1990 at 518 North Knox Street and is home to both IPSC (International Shooting Confederation) sanctioned events as well as NRA matches/compounds open to anyone who wishes to participate. The Target also doubles as home field for local high school sports teams during their halftime contests during the school year

The first post office was established in 1838. In 1850, the Caldwells donated land to the city for a public square. The current site of the square was made available to Calumet City by developer William Wrigley in 1892. The city's population peaked at 14,500 in 1930 but has since decreased modestly due to various factors including suburbanization and economic decline. The history of Calumet City begins with its namesake, Major John Caldwell. Caldwell arrived in 1795 from North Carolina after fighting for independence there during the American Revolution. He erected a log cabin on what is now southwest corner of Main Street and State Avenue (later renamed Elm Street) in what is today Calumet City, Illinois. After several years he moved his family to this location and started trading goods with Native Americans who frequented the area for fishing, hunting and gathering supplies. Caldwell's original townsquare consisted of only two buildings: an ox-cart road bridge over Elk River that connected his cabin with those of other settlers along State Avenue (now Elm Street), and a rudimentary schoolhouse located on present day Center Street near where Union Pacific Railroad tracks crossed it back then. Over time however, more buildings were built around this central square until it reached its present form about 1800 when majoritarian government began moving away from communalism towards individualism as advocated by Daniel Webstermand citizen militias operating under state auspices known as "battalions". This ushered in an era characterized by increasing subdivision and subdivisions within already thinly populated areas which would continue into the early 21st century when Chicago annexed much of Calumet County becoming one large city surrounded only by suburbs

In 1855, the US Army burned down the old brick courthouse in downtown Calumet City to prevent its use as a arsenal. In 1861, Confederate soldiers capturedCalumet City and burned it down.
