The first gun safe company in Calumet City was the Brown and Williamson Safe Company. The early guns safes were made of wood and were very sturdy. The company was founded by two brothers, Walter and Orville Brown. They started the business in 1905. In 1907, Walter Brown patented a safe that could be locked from the inside with a keyhole system. This safe became known as the "Walter Brown Safe". In 1912, Orville Brown died suddenly, leaving his brother with control of the business. The brothers continued to make their own safes until 1957 when they merged with another company to form American Armory Corporation.
Calumet City, Illinois is a small city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. The town was founded by John Wesley Hardin in 1847 and named for the Calumet River. It was incorporated as a city in 1892. The current mayor is Eric Jackson. The first post office in Calumet City was established on July 24, 1847, and received its name from John Wesley Hardin, who had named it after his home state of Kentucky—the first U.S. post office to be so designated. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Indiana-Kane County line; it became an important transportation hub for farmers and other businesses that transported goods to and from Chicago through the Illinois Central Railroad network. In addition to its role as an agricultural center, Calumet City also developed into a manufacturing center during this time with a significant presence in papermaking and shoeing until these industries went out of business around World War II; however, today most activity occurs within the commercial district east of Main Street which contains many large retailers such as Sears Holdings Corporation (owned by Sears Holding Company). In 1978–79 when main street was renovated as part of Mayor Jackson's master planning effort for downtown redevelopment with new restaurants/retailers/pubs/entertainment venues etc., much brick work (between First National Bank building across SMain Street and Park Avenue) still remains largely unexecuted because no one wanted to move into what would have been their "grandma's house" after all these years! Now many people enjoy walking or biking down Main Street just past all those historical reminders – I can think of only 2 places that are currently not inhabited: that big old white barn near the railroad tracks at milepost 6 near where S Main meets Hwy 309 (~2 miles south of downtown), now used as office space for FedEx Ground (and huge dumpster next door), and that former gas station which has been converted into apartments (@25th & Hwy 101) called "The Gristmill". This last listed property also has a beautiful little pond nearby complete with fowl – perfect place to take your young children swimming! Today there are several restaurants open late including Pizzeria Paradiso( pizza ), Joe's Pizza( subs ), Subway (), Chinese Buffet (), Live Music Lounge () There are several bar conversions happening like Theater District Bar & Grill () which will be turning into High Society Nightclub (); Parish Social () which will become Rave Live (); Lighthouse Tavern (). There are also several cafes opening up like Cafe Grumpy (), Cafe Bottegaiola (), Blue Moon Café (), Jazz Alley (). Finally there is even some new development being created called "Village Square", consisting mostly of high-end condos but with plans for retail spaces too,.

The city of Calumet City was founded by farmers in 1836. The first settlers were John and Rebecca Hutton, who named the city after their farm in Tipton County, Michigan. The city grew rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 200 people. In 1851, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill granting Calumet City an incorporation charter. The town built its first buildings soon after, including a courthouse and jail. It became one of the most eagerly awaited cities in the state when it was announced that Chicago would be hosting the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. However, due to financial issues at the exposition organizer Cosmopolitan Landmarks Corporation (CLC), only about 50% ofCalumet City's promised development project came to fruition. In 1916, local developer Harry Chandler bought land east of downtown for what would become McCormick Place—the world’s largest indoor arena at that time. McCormick Place saw heavy use during World War II as the city hosted military bases and airfields for both Chicago and North America. During post-war decades, Calumet City experienced rapid growth as new homes were constructed along Illinois Route 55 and Interstate 90/294; however, this growth stopped near downtown when Interstate 90 was truncated just north of town in 1972. Today, much of downtown is still filled with old housing developments which are home to many smaller businesses and residences than before; while State Street fronts onto a high-quality park which offers plenty of public space for activities like concerts or festivals
