In response to increasing demand for housing within walking distance of jobs and other attractions`, developers began purchasing parcels of land around downtown Calumet City starting in the early 1960s and soon created what is now one of Chicagos most extensive suburbs with more than 2 million residents living within 10 miles (16 km) of downtown Chicago including some 1,500 businesses and services located inside Downtown Chicago limits alone!

As word spread about this new initiative, more people started arriving in search of farmland near Chicago's industrial areas so they could establish their own small towns or villages instead of living close to large cities like Toronto or New York City. On December 12th 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order creating Illinois' first township within Cook County - CalumET City –named after Professor Thomas Fenton and James Hennepin who had organized the original group that purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha). With just over one hundred residents residing within its borders at its inception—it would grow rapidly into one of Chicagos largest villages with a population exceeding ten thousand by 1872 when it incorporated as an incorporated village under state law! This growth continued until 1920 when prohibition made alcohol illegal throughout much of America which caused many farmers to move out westward into Oklahoma where liquor sales were legal! However; due to heavy industry presence along I-55 & I-90 leading to limited housing demand for workers commuting into downtown Chicago;CalUMET CITY continued expanding rapidly becoming one of Chicagos most vibrant small town communities until 1990 when it too experienced prohibitionary restrictions that prevented it from achieving even modest levels Of growth again until 2013 when ballot measures were passed legalizing adult drinking & cannabis usage! Consequently;CalUMET CITY has seen significant resurgence over recent years with plans underway for redevelopment/ Expansion!!

The first permanent settler in the area was the Calumet City Company, which arrived in 1824. The city was named for General James K. Polk, who served as United States President from 1845 to 1849 and died in office at the age of 54. The company built a log cabin on what is now Canal Street, and laid out a town grid plan with streets running east-west and north-south. In 1830, the Illinois State Legislature approved a bill creating a new county within Cook County along the south side of Chicago River. On November 3, 1830, Calumet City became part of this new county as well. The original courthouse building still stands on Canal Street adjacent to current City Hall. In 1831, Robert McCloskey founded the first ice cream parlor in Calumet City when he opened his shop on Dearborn Street between Wacker Drive and Adams Boulevard. The parlor continued to serve ice cream until it closed in 1951; however, it continues to be preserved as part of the local history museum complex located near downtown Chicago. In 1834, John Caiaphas founded another business in Calumet City: an opium store that operated for six years before being shut down by officials due to public outcry. After his store's closure, Caiaphas began selling liquor directly from his home until 1840 when he moved into what is now Jackson Park near North Shore Drive; there he continued operations until his death at age 83 years old in 1860. In 1840 Daniel Bogue opened a bakery called "Bogue's Bakery" on Old Orchard Road south of Michigan Avenue.
