Calumet City is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. The first permanent settlers of Calumet City were James and Nancy Caldwell, who arrived in 1827. At that time the area now known as Calumet City consisted of a small tract of land south of present day Chicago on the north side of the Fox River. The Caldwells had been married in 1797 and their infant daughter died soon after her birth from pneumonia contracted while she was visiting her family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1828, James Caldwell Sr., moved his family to what is now parts of Downers Grove and Tinley Park on the east bank of the Fox River where he opened a tannery which he operated for 25 years until his death in 1868. A few years later another settler named John Fitzpatrick also moved to this area and started an agricultural business which prospered until 1865 when fire destroyed much of this town including Fitzpatrick's tannery and farmsteads; Fitzpatrick rebuilt near where he currently resides today known as "Fitzpatrick Square". In 1830, Peter Buren (a native German immigrant) settled on a parcel of land west of present day Cicero between Dutchna Boulevard (now Harrison Street) and Green Road (now West Side Avenue). This site became what is now Buren Park. In 1835, John Larkin bought two hundred acres adjacent to Buren Park from Peter Buren for $1 cash plus ten cents per acre per year for 10 years with no interest payable until sold ortil such time that Larkin could build himself a house or barn on said property. By 1860 only about one-third of Calumet City remained unoccupied due to its location along easy routes linking Chicago with other Midwestern towns; most residents worked on farms within commuting distance by wagon or horseback during these early days before automobiles arrived much later). In1860 Isaac Neely purchased 640 acres just west side OFpresent day Cicero between Harrison Street and State Streets from John Larkin for $10 dollars (). The Calumet City, Illinois community began as a small village in the township of Calumet on the banks of the River Des Plaines. The first settler in this area was John A. Prentice, who arrived in 1847. By 1860, there were only twelve residents living in what is now Calumet City.
