The first settlers were able to build homes quickly using logs they gathered from nearby woods. They soon realized that they needed water so they constructed dams upstream which became known as "The Dams". By 1850 there were over 50 homes in Townships 1–3 living side by side within easy access of each other thanks largely to Erie Canal construction which connected downtown Chicago with shipping destinations along Lake Michigan. During this time period there were also some important events taking place which helped shape future developments in local politics: On November 4th 1851 John Prentice was elected Mayor pro tempore becoming the first African American resident of Chicago; on December 3rd 1853 James Caldwell was elected Superintendent of Schools becoming metropolitan area’s first black superintendent; on March 2nd 1865 Abraham Lincoln was assassinated leaving Abe Vidal sole Presidente & Chief Justice Of The United States Supreme Court

Calumet City is a small city located in the Illinois River Valley in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 9,055 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by Rockford to the south, Danville to the east, and Beloit to the north. The first settlement in Calumet City was laid out by Captain John Healey on December 6, 1807. The town was named for Sir George Calumet who had fought against British forces during the War of 1812. The first settler in Calumet City was David Dunham who arrived on October 15, 1809. For many years it was one of the most rural areas in McHenry County and there were few businesses or industry until about 1920 when industrialization began to take hold throughout much of central Illinois. In 1830 Abraham Lincoln visited Calumet City while he served as a Representative from Massachusetts during his race for President and noted its importance as a trading post on the river system between Chicago and Springfield. After his election as President in November 1830 he decided to move his presidential residency from Springfield toChicago so that he would be closer to political decisions made within Illinois rather than waiting for Congress to pass legislation affecting him directly. During General Harrison’s vice Presidential campaign in 1840–41 John Cranch discovered oil reserves near Lima, Ohio which led him and others investors including James Giddings (founder of Giddings Iron Works)to invest large sums of money into developing this valuable resource which would become one of America’s largest industries during the 19th century due largely to advances by Niles Eldredge (the founder of Inland Steel). On July 4th,1863 Calumet City became home to America’s first military installation when two companies from Missouri organized as an infantry regiment known as “Illinois Volunteers” under command of Colonel J Halleck with Col Richard Tottencommanding artillery division adjacent at Kankakee Junction Railroad depot across from town limits just outside city limits where cannon could be brought down range daily under cover of darkness before being transported back into camp each night via wagons drawn by mules pulled by pack horse-drawn buggies
The city of Calumet City was founded in 1827 by James H. Smith, a lawyer and surveyor who also purchased the land that today includes the core of the city. The original name for the town was "Hengsterville" after one of Smith's clients,Peter Hengst, who had provided him with a tract of land to settle. In 1831, Calumet City became the first village in Illinois when it was organized as a township. The following year, it became a city and began to grow rapidly according to its own plans and abilities. During the 1830s and 1840s, Calumet City experienced population growth due to its agricultural activities and its location on the Mississippi River floodplain. Many new residences were built in what is now downtown Calumet City as settlers moved there during this time period. In 1848, when Illinois became an state with its own government,Calumet City regained its right to be called a city through legislation passed by the General Assembly. Over time, Calumet City has seen significant economic growth thanks to its vital river commerce interests which have included shipping from both Chicago and Milwaukee; manufacturing businesses such as McCormick & Co.; real estate development; professional services; agriculture; and other sectors including finance and insurance.
