The other citizens who were nearby saw what he did and started arguing about who should get to keep the barrel. Ultimately, John Ahern got his arm wrapped around the barrel and took it home with him. From then on, guns would always play a big role in Calumet City!

The community was named for General James Calumet, who fought in the War of 1812 and founded Fort Dearborn on the site of modern-day Chicago. The first permanent settler in what would become Calumet City was Isaac Butt (1789-1858), an Englishman who had married a local girl and built a cabin near what is now Main Street. In 1811, General James Calumet and his men were searching for new land to whom they could sell their services during the War of 1812, when they came across Butt's cabin. They decided to name the settlement after Calumet because he had played a significant role in that war and they thought his name would be associated with military success. In 1830, John Pope moved to Calumet City from Moline with his family; he started a grocery store there which would remain an important part of town life until it closed its doors in 1935. Other early businesses include Cook's Tavern (established 1792), Peddleways boots (1801), Ford & Hagerty wagon shop (1810), Masonic Hall (established 1836) and First National Bank ( established 1837). During the late 19th century, many entrepreneurs moved into town including J C Fields Opryland Theatre Corporation which opened its doors on October 6th 1903 as one of only two theatres west of St Louis open to people without tickets or pay per view; along with Universal Studios Hollywood this made it one of America's largest movie theaters by 1910 . Many well known individuals such as Will Rogerslived or worked here during this time including Mayor John Strogerand First Lady Evalyn Walsh Scott also resided here while attending university outside Chicago where she later became Governor Of Illinois

Polk traveled through Illinois and found that Caldwell's Corners had become an important trade center for farmers along the river because of its location upstream from Chicago's main commercial artery,the Western By-pass (now I-90). In 1830, when Calumet City became a city within Illinois, it elected its first mayor, Isaac Noyes. In 1835–36, Edwin Booth visited Calumet City and recommended that Congress make it a stop on its western railroad tour to promote development along the riverfront in Illinois; this proposal failed to gain traction until president Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation in February 1846 which led to increased traffic on the Western By-pass and new investments in railroads across America including one through Calumet City! After being annexed by Chicago in 1847, Calumet City grew rapidly due to imports of lumber from Michigan via steamboats upriver (today's Union Pacific Railroad line), repeal of state land laws favoring agriculture by Major General George Wright during Reconstruction and expanding industrial production with construction of Regal Mills & Packing Co., formerly known as Armour Mill & nails company) which employed over 1,000 workers before closure in 1924; agricultural production declined thereafter until recent times when several thousand people work at Sunoco Logistics LLC Incorporation headquarters located adjacent to old Regal Mill site). Today much evidence remains documenting both American settlement at present dayCalumetCity as well as early growth associated with railroad activity throughout these decades including: numerous pre-existing churches and schools built during this time period such as First Presbyterian Church (1827), Episcopal cathedral (1830), Methodist church (1834), Armour mill complex(1924) – all now long gone but their impact still remains today! Additionally notable are two extant casinos – Cuyahoga County Racetrack Casino Resort - located adjacent to downtown skyline only miles away from original Regal Mill site where local residents comprised almost 60% majority ownership beginning circa 1990s interspersed with periods of casino closures/revocations; and also Eldorado Casino Lakeview which opened onsite adjacent Highland Park neighborhood approximately 2 blocks southward serving portions of nearby Cicero Township since 2005!
