Byrne issued an ordinance designating Calumet City as a borough; this act created what would become known as community development organizations – or CDOs – throughout Cook County which were responsible for providing social services such as health care and housing to low-income residents. These organizations continue to operate today and play a critical role in economic development within CalumETCity proper and across suburban neighborhoods surrounding it. As one of Chicagoland's largest municipalities with over 1 million residents (2010), Calumet City has responded quickly to changes wrought by rapid gentrification and urban growth around it; public works projects have been renovated or rebuilt multiple times since 2000 alone! Calumet City is a city located in Calumet County, Illinois. The population was 21,383 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Calumet County. The city was founded on April 12, 1836 by Captain John C. Dearborn and his family as Dearbornville. In 1848, it joined the American Civil War as a Confederate military town and was burned by Union troops on July 8, 1848. It rejoined the United States after the war and became a center for grain storage and trade with Indiana during the early 19th century. The original name of Calumet City was Dearbornville until1836 when it changed to honor Captain John C Dearborn who had fought in the Mexican-American War and also helped found Chicago in 1833. The first permanent settler in what is now Calumet City was Capt John Dearborn who arrived with his family from Pennsylvania in April of 1836 after traveling through most of America looking for land to settle. After landing at Buffalo Bayou he built a cabin which served as their home until they could find more suitable land further away from Native Americans that he claimed right along Buffalo Bayou or else risk being raided by them while he was away working on his new farmstead/city site (later renamed Dearbornville). Dearbornville grew rapidly due to its strategic location midway between two major rivers; the Fox River to the north and Lake Michigan to the south – making it an ideal site for grain storage and trade with Indiana during various stages of development throughout late antebellum Illinois including: 1) Independence War era 2) Diggory period 3) Starvation era 4) National Revival era 5) Midwestern Expansion era 6) Great Migration era 7) Post-World War II eras etc). 2ndGeneration Settlers: Lorenzo Matson (1837), Edward Hutton (1839), George Aiken (1841), James Jealousy(1842), Lewis Matson (1843), Cornelius Phelps (1 845-46), Hiram Bingham(1847-50). 3rd Generation Settlers: Andrew Powers(1 855-59), John Fritchey(1 860-63), Augustus Kelley(1 865-68). 4th Generation Settlers: Jacob Weisenbach(869-)

In 1873, Calumet City became the site of one of the largest industrial accidents in United States history when an engine failure caused a mine fire that destroyed more than 1 million tons of coal. The event is also known as "The Great Chicago Coal Strike". During World War II, local businesses supplied food to troops stationed in Europe. After the war ended, many local businesses closed down or went out of business. However, some such as Naugahyde Chemical Company remain active to this day.
