Polk entered Calumet City while its residents were attending a meeting to discuss surrendering their cannons and stores to Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. The city was burned down by Union troops on February 15th as part of the Battle of Fort Donelson in which Confederate Major General Robert Ewell lost his life and thousands of men were killed or wounded including many local citizens who had fought for him throughout the war. In 1865, following the end of the Civil War and Reconstruction, Calumet City reverted back to its original name: plainfield township

In 1850, the Academy and Mechanics Institute were built in what would become known as Old Town and served as a school district until it merged with other local schools in 1959 to form Parkland School District No. 1. By 1860, there were only four residents living in downtown Calumet City; three men and one woman had arrived from Ireland that year alone. In 1864 when America's Civil War began, many Irishmen volunteered for military service and a few years later some Irishmen founded companies that supplied food to Union soldiers across Illinois and Wisconsin during the war They also raised money for Confederate forces through gambling operations which continued into Reconstruction days when African American soldiers serving with Northern armies could not do so without risking arrest or being returned home to slavery
