Calumet City, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,919 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name comes from the Calumet River and its tributaries. The first settlers in Calumet City were white men who came overland from what is now Indiana in 1814. They named their Village of North Calumet after the river that ran through it. In 1828, they moved to what is now South Calumet and founded a community called Prairie View on land donated by Amos Kendall and others in that year. In 1831, they builds a gristmill on the current site of the University of Notre Dame campus and named it after their village’s namesake. In 1847, John Cermak built a sawmill on the banks of the Calumet River near where he would later create his wood products business, Cermak & Company. This mill served as an important economic factor for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1926. In 1865, James Prentice purchased what is now Easton Park from Samuel Gregg for $8 per acre and established himself as one of Chicago’s most prosperous businessmen with his new operation known simply as Prentice Land & Manufacturing Co.. Over time this company became one of Illinois’ leading landowners and developed extensive real estate holdings throughout Cook County including portions of downtown Chicago today known as Midtown (now Walker Field), Wacker Avenue (now State Street), Lake Shore Drive (now Halsted Street), and Roosevelt Road/Plympton Road eastward to Cicero Avenue (now Pulaski Highway). The growth of Calumet City began in the early 1800s when a group of men from neighboring towns formed a company to develop land. The men, led by James Caldwell, purchased over 2,000 acres of land and founded what is now known as Caldwell & Sons Company. The company soon became one of the leading interests in the town, developing new businesses and expanding their reach into the local market. In 1825, Caldwell & Sons erected a flour mill on the east side of town for production of cornmeal and other goods for local consumption. The mill was quickly becoming one of the largest in Illinois, and it continued to be operation until1860. In 1866, Calumet City became an incorporated village under the leadership of Mayor Cornelius J. Ryan Jr., which helped spur development within the town. Over time, Calumet City grew into one of the most vibrant communities in northeastern Illinois -families lived and worked together in close-knit neighborhoods that boasted elegant schools and thriving businesses. Calumet City experienced some difficult times during its history -a fire destroyed many homes in 1904; World War II caused decreases in manufacturing activity within the town; however, it bounced back with increased economic stability thanks to strong municipal government presence and investment. In recent years, advances in technology have made Calumet City one of America's most livable cities -the city has seen rapid growth in both population and economy since 2007 due to concerted efforts by residents, businesses, and civic groups.
