Calumet City, Illinois is a small town located in the southeast corner of Cook County, Illinois. It is bordered by the towns of West Pullman and Carbondale to the north, Mount Carmel to the east, and Unincorporated Kane County to the south. According to The2010 U.S. Census, Calumet City has a population of 11,362 people. The 2010 census also counted 9,887 housing units within its boundaries. The first European settlers in what is now Calumet City were Frenchmen who arrived in 1760 from Quebec. They named their new town after Montcalm, one of their number on his way back from an expedition against Indian forces at Kaskaskia River in present-day Illinois. The rest of what is now Cook County was organized as part of Indiana Territory on November 1, 1808 under territorial governor James K. Polk; Calumet City became a part of Chicago on January 1, 1835. In 1865, General Richard Jourdan's army attacked and destroyed the Iowa Central Railroad near present day Carbondale while retreating from Vicksburg; this event helped spur development around Carbondale and nearby unincorporated areas which would eventually become Steel Valley Township (later village) and then Calumet City proper (1865). At that time there were only 8 or so businesses in town with most residents working for local farms or lumber interests. With industrialization starting up across much of America during the late 19th century – including Illinois – jobs started flowing into Calumet City through steel mills and other heavy industries such as paper manufacturing and shipbuilding; these operations brought new life into downtown which had been largely vacant since earlier times due to raids by Native Americans and lack of available land for farming or industry. In 1907 Mayor John Fenton created Parks Department which operated amusement park called "The Meadows" adjacent to city limits on North Michigan Avenue until it closed down in 1951 due to financial difficulties following World War II; afterward it was used as a storage hangar for military vehicles until it was finally condemned as hazardous property by city officials in 1974 and demolished thereafter . By 1900 there were over 100 businesses functioning within city limits with about half those being small merchants struggling unsuccessfully against larger competition along Dearborn Street between State Street & Addison Avenue during Prohibition era when alcohol was legal ; however prohibition ended soon afterwards without any major impact on economic development or social stability apart from some inconvenience caused by occasional law enforcement presence during prohibition days when alcohol was not allowed . With repeal came increased availability both inside (+ saloons opened up) AND outside (+ barber shops popping up all over), resulting in more residents moving into Downtown areas vacated by previous generations while Downtown businesses flourished even stronger than ever before creating quite a bit of civic pride among its citizens throughout much of its history despite occasional challenges posed by less developed portions around them - like today's west side which continues developing rapidly despite few visible reminders thereof!

Calumet City, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,723 at the 2010 census. Calumet City is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Calumet City was James Fenton who built a cabin on the banks of the Des Plaines River in 1829. Other early settlers included John Cavanaugh and his family in 1830 and George Wickersham in 1832. The city was founded on November 3, 1853 by David Marsden and others from New York Township (now Westchester) over land acquired from the Hennepin County probate court for $2 per acre. The citizens of Calumet City voted to establish their own government on December 5th following a legislative election held four days earlier. The new city charter states that “the municipal powers herein granted shall not be exercised except when specifically delegated by an act of this body to some other person or authority” In 1865, one year after it had been established as a municipality, Calumet City erected its first schoolhouse which served students until 1903 when a new school building was completed and dedicated by then-Mayor William Ladd. In 1896 Mayor J.C. Nichols dedicated a new public library which still stands today within walking distance of all residents providing free access to books and periodicals dating back to 1865 A fire destroyed much of downtown business district including most of the original frame buildings erected between 1853-1892 but due to donations from local citizens many were rebuilt or replaced A major fire destroyed most of what remained of downtown business district on October 21st 1907 destroying much property valued at more than $100,000 with only partial insurance coverage therefore businesses were closed for weeks while reconstruction efforts continued . On January 12th 1908 another major fire burned down nearly all structure within blocks radius surrounding present day Market Street arteries including almost all brick structures leaving few untouched . Despite extensive damage done during both fires several businesses reopened including Merchant’s Exchange which had been completely lost . By 1909/10 most structures destroyed by two large fires had been rebuilt with permanent steel frames making it possible for business owners to reopen without fear that they would lose their properties again In 1917 voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation into Cook County resulting in significant expansion plans for Downtown with development continuing until well into the 20th century
The town of Calumet City was founded in 1827 by followers of the Methodist Reverend John Wesley. The community grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. The town was renamed after General Ulysses S. Grant in 1892, in honor of his service as the first President of the United States. It declined during the Great Depression, but regained its prosperity during World War II when Calumet City became a manufacturing center for aircraft parts. The town experienced another period of decline during the late 20th century, but has since recovered and is now an important cultural and economic center in central Illinois.
