Cahokia was a major center of the Mississippian culture, which flourished in the 6th century AD. The Cahokians built large stone and earth tombs and developed an elaborate system of hieroglyphics. Their chief deity was Hiawatha, who was thought to preside over all natural phenomena. The Cahokians were one of the most powerful cultures in Illinois during the Late Woodland period. They may have been the first Native Americans to settle in that state and their influence can be seen throughout much of central Illinois today. The government of Cahokia is commemorated by a number of monuments and sites, including the Cahokia Mounds National Monument, which are located near downtown Chicago.

Cahokia is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It lies east of the Chicago metropolitan area and west of the City of Chicago. Cahokia was founded by French missionaries in 1768 as a Jesuit mission station on the confluence of the Potawatomi and Vermilion rivers. The site was chosen because it offered excellent timberland for building boats and other heavy materials for Catholic missions across the Great Lakes region. The first European to visit Cahokia was Pierre Laclède in 1768, when he discovered a Native American village near its present-day location. After his exploration, Laclède noted that the villages along these two rivers were "of immense size." He also conjectured that they may have been descendants of a people who had once lived in what is now Ohio and Michigan. In 1769, Father Jacques Marquette explored this same area and discovered similar villages on both banks of the new Vermilion River. From these initial observations, Marquette hypothesized that these villages were either related to or descended from Algonquian-speaking peoples whom he called "the Illini" because their language resembled that of the Illiniwek Tribe in central Illinois. He named one of these villages after himself – Cahokia – because its site seemed ideally situated for trade with nearby tribes such as the Potawatomi and Wyandotte. In 1773, while still at Cahokia, Father Louis Rouillard observed activity at an important Ojibwa settlement some miles downstream on theIllinois River known as Kaskaskia (now Lansing). Rouillard believed that this new village might be affiliated with Algonquian-speaking peoples living along both sides of Lake Michigan; however, he could not identify them from any available cultural evidence. On July 20th,1773–4th anniversary of Rouillard's visit to Kaskaskia–site designated by him as capital city by Act No., Paine gave land heretofore belonging to Copley Charity Hospital & Orphan Asylum located at Race Street & State Street Easton Township aforesaid to said Kiskaska Indians under agreement made between us & them 4 years ago Sept 10 th . Stated Paine: "It gives me great satisfaction to see our Indian friends thriving under English rule." This donation sets off a series Of events which will lead ultimately to white settlement around Cahokia itself! On November 8th 1810 , General James Armistead founds Fort Dearborn just south-west of present day Ottawa on Orleans River opposite Ottawa Valley - then part Canadian Territory - during his Expedition against The Northwest Ordinance Prohibiting Slavery!. The fort served as headquarters for Union forces during most OFT operations throughout Illinois until 1862 when it was surrendered by General Sterling Price after Capture Of Fort Wayne At Peoria In 1809!. Some artifacts excavated from Fort Dearborn include cannonsballs inscribed with “George Washington” which became property Of United States Congress In 1865 according To law 3d Congt 1st Sess.– added To National Museum! Cahokia, Illinois was a Native American town in the central United States that was abandoned after being destroyed by European explorers in the late 16th century. The town was first mentioned by early Europeans in 1524 when they noted an area of high relief resembling an image of a man with a bow and arrow. The discovery of artifacts from Cahokia suggests that it may have been a major center of power during its time as an important trading post. After being destroyed by European explorers, Cahokia slowly recovered over time and became known for its artistic and religious accomplishments. In 1847, it was acquired by the United States government as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of their efforts to promote American culture, the US government erected several monuments to various members of Cahokian descent including Chief Osage Waré and his wife Sachemesso. Today, much remains at Cahokia which has been preserved for future visitors to explore and learn about its history.
