Cahokia was founded in 1819 by the Mennonites. The first European settlers were Hugh and John Nevin, who arrived in 1819. In 1830, Cahokia was given to the United States by France as part of the Treaty of Paris. The town continued to be a U.S. Military Base until 1971 when it became a suburb of Chicago.
Cahokia, Illinois is a small town located in Putnam County, Illinois. Cahokia was founded in 1811 by the Potawatomi tribe and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the United States. The population of Cahokia was 5,000 in 1800 and 9,000 by 1850. In 1847, Cahokia was burned down by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The fire destroyed much of the town but not its buildings which were preserved and used as museums until 1975. The town has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1978. The village of Cahokia formed around an encampment called Kaskaskia which was established by the potawatomi tribe in 1811 as part of their effort to establish trade routes with Native Americans living to the north and east. The first post office at Kaskaskia was established on October 15, 1812 under the name "Cahokia." By 1830, however, Kaskaskia had become known as "Cahoka" due to its location within sight of both Chicago and St Louis (then Missouri). After three years of wrangling between various land grant owners over who would have jurisdiction over what lay outside their respective villages boundaries- including what lay within present- Gouverneur Morris finally awarded it to John Kinzie for purchase from Jesse Weiser on November 10th 1831. In 1840, when Osceola Indian Territory became organized into Illinois Territory following his victory over General Winfield Scott at Peoria River Bridge near present day Decatur IL., Kaskaskawas renamed Cahokia after President James Kankakee's visit there that year. For most of its history until 1975, Cahokian buildings were designed by noted landscape architect George Washington Stephenson with input from local builders/contractors responsible for erecting many notable features in contemporary America such as Union Pacific Railroad lines just south of downtown Kahoka (renamed Chicago West Side circa 1900)and Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Regency Tower tower complex atop originaltrainyard lot now occupied by Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Building #2 etc... At this time also starting construction locally on today's namesake High School Dean Park Drive site approximately 1 mile west side road entrance off Hwy 59 opposite where current First Congregational Church building once stood; Blockhouse No 2 still stands - built 1935-1937 using stone quarried near modern day Elmhurst Village

After centuries of growth, Cahokia reached its peak under its ruling king Kincaid about AD 1300. However, Cahokians soon fell victim to epidemics and violence which devastated their culture and society. In 1479, Kincaid was killed by his own subjects while trying to flee into exile; his kingdom collapsed shortly thereafter. After Kincaid's death, his successor ruled over a fractious kingdom which fractured into numerous small independent villages. Eventually, all vestiges of Cahokian culture were lost forever; only a few fragments remain today scattered among archaeological sites across Illinois and elsewhere in North America."
