Cahokia was founded by the Shawnee in 1771, and became an important trading post on the Great Lakes. The Cahokians were among the earliest European settlers in what is now Illinois. In 1812, they joined with other Indian nations to form the United States of America. The Cahokian Village was one of the largest and most successful American villages. In 1834, a group of American Indians led by General Winfield Scott attacked Cahokia. After his death in 1799, two of his sons—Emmalyn and Joseph—started building what would become one of Illinois' most famous landmarks: The State Capitol Complex now stands on top of one of Cahokian ruins (the rest are preserved as museums). Today aspects such as this remain an important part of history and culture in Illinois; visitors can visit some remains located within easy walking distance from downtown Chicago or take buses Tours that take you around these sites on different days each week (such as Wednesday). And because they lived close together pretty much everything got done- including repairing water systems ans creating schools- even if those schools didn't necessarily teach anything useful!
