Cahokia, Illinois was an ancient Indian town located in modern-day Cahokia County, Illinois. The mound at Cahokia is the remains of the town that was built by the Hennepin tribe around AD 900. In 1811, General James K. Polk and Admiral David Dixon Porter were travelling through the area when they came across a small village of Native Americans known as the Miamis. They were so impressed with their village that they ordered all their troops to halt and investigate. After observing how well-armed and armoured these natives were, they decided to give them assistance in building a road between Fort Dearborn and Chicago. This event led to the United States becoming involved inNative American Wars by helping to arm these nations against other groups who wanted to take over their land.
