Cahokia is a small town located in Cahokia Township, Kane County, Illinois. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Cahokia is the seat of Kane County. It has a rich history dating back to pre- European American times and was once one of the most significant towns in Illinois. The first Europeans to visit Cahokia were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1677. The town was founded by the Potawatomi tribe and was named for their Chief Kaskaskia. By 1728, Cahokia had become one of the largest Indian villages in North America due to its strategic location between General James Wilkinson's army attacking British forces along the Great Lakes region and France's growing trade with India via the Mississippi River system. In 1738, William Prentice built a small fortification known as Fort Dearborn on what is now Green Street in downtown Cahokia after purchasing land from the Potawatomi Tribe. Prentice served as area commander for Northwest Territory during the French and Indian War that ensued following Britain's victory over France at Quebec City in 1745. After Frenchgain control of Canada in 1763,province became part of Great Britain until it was ceded to France under Emperor Napoleon I in 1804. During World War II, Cahokia played an important role as an industrial center manufacturing munitions such as gasoline tanks, aircraft parts and ammunition used by both Germany and Japan within their war efforts against Allied forces across Europe. The community experienced significant economic growth after production began moving out of Chicago towards Cahokiahateamers produced products that could be exported around the world including items like automobile parts used by Ford Motor Company throughout much of Asia; carpets made mostly from wool thread which were popular among East Asian countries; cooking oil used by Japanese troops during World War II; aluminum cans filled with kerosene that were dropped into Japanese ports before being sold to American consumers; processed foods like ice cream concentrate (a precursor to modern day energy drinks) manufactured at local factories such as Stroud Glass Workshops where candy bars were made using natural flavors like cherry or vanilla extract; pottery shards used for window glass manufacture; lead arsenical paint used on warships exterior hulls during World War II There are also numerous dismantled buildings still standing today scattered throughout downtown including many examples of early 20th century African-American housing developments such as Healy Gardenswhich remain largely unchanged since they were erected circa 1900 although alterations have been made on several occasions including removal/installation of metal roofing etc.; The Harlan Furniture Company building which operated from 1901 until 1971 when it burned down reducing its footprint from 5 stories x 100 feet to just 40 feet x 24 feet making it one of only two remaining buildings left standing from this venerable furniture company In addition there are several large commercial properties extant within city limits such as Sears Towerwhich overlooks Downtown & portions of Midtown not currently occupied by residential dwellings while another large property situated near Interstate 90 between State Street & Randolph Road remains undeveloped despite extensive public outreach seeking interest in developing this site into a mixed use redevelopment project featuring office/retail space along with village acres comprising parkland & openspace . Finally there are several abandoned warehouses located throughout rural Kane County containing materials collected during construction or renovation projects some dating back up to 50 years old . Overall these complexes offer tangible evidence illustrating how demolition & relocation has occurred over time resulting in continuous alteration & evolution of current urban form across varying regions

Jesuit missionaries arrived in Cahokia in 1634 and began missionary work here. In 1783, the British Purchasers of Louisiana took control of Cahokia after defeating France at the Battle of Baton Rouge. The British burned down much of Cahokia before leaving it behind to decay into obscurity. In 1847, an American party led by fur trader J.B. Sayre explored the area around Cahokia and discovered Ruins No. 1 (now known as Sayre House). Excavations at this site revealed evidence that Cahokians had inhabited this area for more than 4,000 years ago. In 1857, General James Kiefer became interested in exploring these ruins and ordered an investigation under his command into their history and potential significance to United States Army efforts against Native Americans throughout Northwestern Illinois region. The results of Kiefer’s study convinced him that these ancient remains could not only help identify Indian sites across Northwestern Illinois but also provide insights into military strategy and tactics used against them over time - thus helping us understand how Native Americans interacted with each other over time while living within their own boundaries
