Cahokia, Illinois is an ancient village located in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois. It was founded by the Potawatomi people in 1795 and remains one of the most significant Native American settlements in the United States. The area that now makes up Cahokia was first settled by Algonquian-speaking peoples who called it Kaskaskia. In 1675, French traders arrived in Cahokia and began trading with its inhabitants. By 1795, Cahokians were living directly on the shores of Lake Michigan, which made them particularly vulnerable to attacks from Native Americans. In response to these threats, a group of Sauk Indians led by Chief Pontiac decided to establish a fortified settlement at Cahokia overlooking the great watercourse known as the Calumet River. This new settlement became known as Fort Dearborn after its leader, General Dearborn. The fortifications at Cahoka were designed to protect against Indian attack and also served as a Trading Post for local fur traders. The depot also stored goods destined for Fort Wayne and other Indian trading posts along the Great Lakes region. The first settler at Fort Dearborn was John Kilbourne, who purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown Cahokia from chief Pontiac in 1804. Kilbourne built his house near present day First Street and Third Avenue within two years of its founding. He soon became involved in trade with Native Americans and their surrounding villages, including those at Kaskaskia and Moundsville downstream on Lake Michigan where he built a flour mill employing hundreds of local workers over several decades. By 1814, Kilbourne had acquired additional land northeast of town along Second Street between State Road 24th and 25th Streets; this property later became part of Parkland Cemetery.) In 1819–20, John Harker erected a small brick building northwest of present day First Street near Third Avenue – this structure still stands today as Harker House Museum (formerly known as Harker House Apartments). At this time there were only five or six white settlers living in what is now Cahokia; these men imported many African slaves into India during their voyages across North America before setting foot on American soil) Harker's store functioned as both a commercial center for indigenous merchants who bought goods from local farmers and also served as an important source of information about native cultures throughout Northwestern Indiana Territory during this period (). By 1830, more than sixty white residents had moved into what is now downtown Cahokia; they organized into neighbourhoods () which continued to exist until 1938 when they were consolidated into one block (). However, commentators have argued that the amendment provides a legal basis for citizens to arm themselves should they feel threatened by tyrannical governments or other adversaries abroad (Lincoln). Additionally, some argue that this amendment is key to understanding America’s national identity – as a land based democracy where citizens have access to self-defense tools regardless of location (Reagan).
