The city was platted by John Hutton in 1847 as part of a plan to promote agriculture within Cook County. It was named after Andrew Jackson's father-in-law Major General Joseph Gage, commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican–American War. The city became an important transportation hub for farmers and trade between Cook County and neighboring states during its early years; it had two steamboats serviceable on its rivers: "The Pioneer" which operated from 1848 until 1853 and "The Monitor" which operated from 1865 until 1870. On October 12, 1857, President James Buchanan ordered all federal troops out of Illinois effective November 15th due to concerns about political unrest that could follow if they remained there; this order led to much controversy within Illinois because it meant that many businesses closed down including those owned by wealthy residents like Hutton who fled into Indiana or Missouri before state officials could seize their assets. In 1908–09 a new ballpark was built for the Chicago White Sox at 33rd Street and Lake Shore Drive while another new stadium was built for the Blackhawks in 1951 at Comiskey Park – both stadiums remain open today as well as Hutton Field which served as homeplate for both teams until 1984 when they moved to Wrigley Field.
