In 1873, Cahokia, Illinois was founded by the Sauk people. The town was located on the banks of the Fox River and it became a trading post between Native Americans and Europeans. Gunsmiths in Cahokia created firearms that were used by both sides in the Indian Wars. In 1881, Cahokia experienced its first tornado. In 1906, Cahokia was renamed to St. Louis Park and then to Chicago after World War I began. In 1968, St. Louis Park was merged into Chicago as an official city division. The village of Cahokia continued to exist until it closed its doors in 1999 due to economic decline and budget cuts from the City of Chicago. Today, there are only a few remaining fragments of the once powerful gunsmithing community that exists at Cahokia during this time period; many of these remnants can be found at local museums or exhibitions dedicated to firearm history and culture around the world today. Some examples include: the John Fetterman Armory Museum in Jacksonville, Florida; the historical society house built on what is now Randolph Street in downtown St Louis Park; and even a small pistol factory still extant today called “The Arsenal” which produces replica pistols for tourists attraction located just south of downtown Chicago off State Street on Chicagoland Boulevard

Cahokia is an extinct city in the St. Clair National Forest in Illinois, United States. Cahokia was first mentioned by the 16th century French explorer and cartographer Jean Nicolet in his Voyage d'Endoume. The name means "Great Village of the Hennepin." The city was founded on a location that is now known as Cahokia Heights. It was one of several major cities along the Great Lakes region during its heyday around 1000-1500 AD. Cahokia grew to be one of the most important trading centers on the Great Lakes, and likely also had a significant impact on cultural development in central North America. The site at which Cahokia stood has been excavated and studied since the early 1960s, with some evidence indicating that it may have been home to up to 100,000 people. In 1818, when Illinois became a United States state, Cahokia was among those selected for inclusion within the new territory. However, due to various factors (e.g., lack of available land), Cahokia fell victim to declining trade and social activity by the end of the 19th century. By 1926, only traces remained of what must once have been an extensive community numbering in excess of 10,000 people. In recent years however, excavation at nearby sites has revealed evidence that large numbers of Native Americans lived near Cahokians throughout their history; this suggests that despite their disappearances from history books over time, these peoples never really left behind a ghost town or forgotten village like many others across North America – they were always present but largely unheard-of until recently.[1]
