Today, much of what is left of Cahokia can be seen buried beneath many miles of rural farmland and development around it. However, portions of the ruins still offer stunning views from atop nearby hills or drive throughs into rural areas near Streator County where much remains preserved for tourists to explore and learn about one of America's oldest cultures.

In 1834–35, surveyors from Nicholas-Jacques Conte's Surveyor General's Department explored what is now Illinois within present day Missouri River boundaries; their report noted that there were several large mounds near modern day Stilwell City (now Wichita), Kansas that may have been related to Cahokian sites. In 1840–41, George Catlin visited Illinois and noted that many Native Americans living around Chisholm Trail had migrated westward overland over a period dating back to before European contact began – he thought they might be remnants of the ancient Mississippian culture known as the Potawatomi or Shawnee people. On July 1st 1840 while surveying land grants between Ottawa County on the south side of Chicago River (near present day Elmhurst) eastward along State Street towards Ottawa County line thence northwesterly along Ottawa County line until it intersected with Chisholm Trail Road on July 8th about 4 miles above modern day Matteson Township on Ionell Creek about 12 miles due east from Prairie du Chien; this grant marks what is now Elgin Township on Cook & Lucas Counties Line approximately due northeast from Bloomington; these lands were part of Shawnee Nation under tribute paid by France pursuant to Treaty Of Fort Dearborn dated January 25th 1763 which ended French domination over much North America ceded by Britain at Paris Peace Conference ending Seven Years War’ On September 9th 1840 United States Army Major Isaac Bowen surveyed same area bounded by State Street on 3 sides including east side past current Northwestern University campus thence northeasterly along said road generally parallel with Cassville Road thence easterly along Cassville Road until it intersected with Nottoway Creek nearpresentday Arlington Heights; this grant marked what is now Elmhurst Township on Cook & Lucas Counties Line approximately due northeast from Bloomington It should be noted that although all three documents mentioned above bear Katz name or Katz family name as developer thereofnone actually refers to Jonathan Katz himself but rather his father Nathan Katz who later sold out his interest inKatz Development Company Ltd.,LLC.,to Jonathan Katz Sr.. This suggests thatJonathan Katz Sr.'s ownership stake did not equate him withJonathan Katz himself
