Its growth continued until the late 1990s when its population decreased due to technological advances and other factors. The history of Burr Ridge begins with farmers from New England and Pennsylvania settling in what is now Burr Ridge in 1833. They called it "Barrington", after General George Washington Burr, who had played an important role in their country's revolution and later served as Secretary of War under President James K. Polk (1846-1849). The town grew quickly because of its position on the Railroad Chute between Chicago and Rockford; it became a small railway center with connections to Buffalo, Rochester, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee and many other towns along the way. By 1840, there were over 50 businesses operating in Burr Ridge - including several banks - thanks to its strategic location and access to transportation infrastructure that allowed for easy trade across state lines. During this time period there was also significant development within the town itself: shops and restaurants opened up soon after they were built while churches were founded or enlarged throughout Burr Ridge thanks to investors looking for property adjacent to busy highways so they could market their services nearby without having sales reps travel all over town! However despite this impressive start to Burr Ridge's history – which included some lofty goals such as connecting Chicago with Rockford – things changed rapidly once railroads arrived in town during the 1840s Era. And so did business activity; by 1850 there were only 10 businesses left operating in Burrridge compared to 300+ present today! This change can be partially attributed torailroad entrepreneurs looking for new opportunities outside of farming/manufacturing; however another big factor must have been technological advancements that completely transformed how businesses operated on both sides of tracks during this time frame: telephones! Prior to 1880 most businesses didn't have phones but started using them soon thereafter due largelyto their increasing importance within society as communication tools not just for farmers/manufacturers but also customers/workers alike! With phone technology becoming more prevalent businesses adopted new ways of doing business such as call centers where agents handled customer service instead of out front...this eventually ledBurr ridge towards becoming one of Illinois' leading suburbs through the 1990s!
